Campaign donations: Which presidential candidates are getting the NBA money?

While real estate mogul Donald Trump is making most of the headlines in the presidential campaign, it’s Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush who dominate among candidates when it comes to fundraising. HoopsHype research shows that’s also true if we consider donations from people involved in the NBA only… except for the fact Cavs owner Dan Gilbert has given a fortune to struggling Republican candidate Chris Christie.

It’s still very early in the process, but pretty much all donors are supporting the Clinton or Bush campaigns.

Some takeaways from our research:

– Hillary Clinton has more donors involved in the NBA business than all the other candidates combined. She’s also the only Democratic presidential candidate receiving NBA money.

– Chris Christie is the candidate receiving the most NBA money thanks to Dan Gilbert’s $750,000 contribution. No other NBA personality is giving to his campaign.

– Florida governor Jeb Bush beats Hillary Clinton in terms of overall NBA donations. He has the DeVos family, owner of the Orlando Magic, to thank. Doug and Richard DeVos have donated $50,000 to Right to Rise, the super PAC supporting Bush’s campaign.

– Of the seven NBA personalities who have donated to the Bush campaign, five are NBA owners. Only two of the 16 Clinton donors are owners.

– Pelicans owner Tom Benson is the only one donating to two different candidates – Bush and Bobby Jindal, governor of Lousiana since 2008.

– Not a single active NBA player has donated to a presidential candidate yet. Caron Butler gave money to the Democratic National Committee last June, though.

– Donald Trump is the star of the campaign so far, but he’s gotten no traction in the NBA. Not even Spencer Hawes has donated.
