Women in the NBA

In today’s society, it seems like great sports news take a back seat to controversy and rumors. I ask myself… Isn’t anyone interested in writing the good stuff about sports anymore?

Can’t we just focus a little more on the fact that the Dallas Mavericks are going to be a much tougher team to beat than ever before and the Boston Celtics will be a 60-plus Ws team. Not to mention Gilbert Arenas is back, and not holding back. Let’s talk about all the good things the NBA does for charities and all the good initiatives. Now this is good news to spread, right?

But the fact is haters in the media don’t care about that. They just want controvesy. Now the hot topic is women in the NBA. Doug and I talked about this issue with blogger Henry Abbott on ESPN.com.

We said what we said, but by no means did we ever insinuate that women don’t belong in the league. That could not be further from truth, but we do feel that the lines need to be fully defined. Everybody should know what her or his job consists of. If it doesn’t happen that way, then you are going to have misunderstandings.

Women are always welcome. I don’t care what the sport is, women should be included. But like my boy Stephen A would say, “HOWEVA”, they need to know what lines they can or cannot cross. And Jackie, with all due respect, you know exactly what i’m talking about. I still have visions of your purse straps swinging in the tunnel of the Staples Center or was it Arco Arena? Not that’s a ride or die sista!! Keep her around Doug!!

Violet Palmer does a tremendous job with officiating, Pam Oliver is the best sideline reporter in the NFL, and there is a growing number of women in the NFL but none really in basketball. I see what you mean.

    Hey Jackie! Good work.

You know I love writing and reading real stories. Personally, it’s where I want to live but the present media construct prohibits propagating such an agenda. It’s very disconcerting. You or Doug give me a shout when you can.

Well when players learn how to control themselves and stop having 7 kids with 6 women (Shawn Kemp) being caught with guns (Sebastian Telfair among countless others) being caught with weed (Lamar Odom among countless others) and crying about being paid millions of dollars a year (Kobe among countless others) then maybe the media can focus on how Shaq gives out toys to kids for Xmas. Oh wait, he is divorcing his wife and 5 children….Maybe she finally caught on to what he has been doing for years at the Century Club in LA.

Doug, good look on making it back, but I just don’t think its going to work out.

And man, these blogs are so exciting, can’t wait for the next one! Maybe it will be about how the NBA has a dress code.

“In today’s society, it seems like great sports news take a back seat to controversy and rumors. I ask myself… Isn’t anyone interested in writing the good stuff about sports anymore?”

    Not really.

“Let’s talk about all the good things the NBA does for charities and all the good initiatives.”

Helping people is not newsworthy, and it bores people. That’s not limited to sports, either. I’m not saying that it’s right, only that it’s true.

“But the fact is haters in the media don’t care about that.”

The media probably cares more than anyone. It’s their readers who don’t care, and the readers control the purse strings.

    Jackie,

I have to tell you I’ve given you a hard time in the past, but I must commend you and Doug on the wonderful, insightfull interview that the two of you gave. I learned a lot about you both as people, and must commend you on your candor, but more importantly your commitment to one another above all else. I must be honest I used to think you guys were a perpetual PR machine, but I believe that interview provided a glimpse of something much deeper — and I like what I see! Much success to you and Doug on your journey.

Heat General Manager Randy Pfund confirmed that 37-year-old guard Doug Christie contacted the Heat regarding a comeback.

“We did take a call, so let’s see what transpires,” said Pfund, who was Christie’s first NBA coach, with the Lakers. “But I don’t think so.
