WHO
RockCorps, an organization that introduces volunteerism to teens and young adults, and Boost Mobile, a wireless telecommunications brand dedicated to boosting the lives of today’s youth, have joined forces this year to launch Boost Mobile RockCorps – a groundbreaking national extension of the RockCorps program that is now motivating young people throughout the U.S. to get involved, connect with their community and inevitably become a part of a youth movement for social change. Combining the power of music, community and volunteerism to breed a new generation of volunteers, the partnership is exposing young people to simple ways they can proactively contribute to their community through volunteerism and have fun doing it.
WHAT
In exchange for contributing four hours of community service work, youth volunteers will receive tickets to popular music concerts in their area. Boost Mobile RockCorps is partnering with non-profit agencies to organize 50 charity projects in major metropolitan areas around the U.S. this summer. Selected volunteers in Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis/St. Paul, and Washington D.C. who complete four hours of community service will receive tickets to some of the best summer concerts and club events in their area. Selected Boost Mobile RockCorps member volunteers in New York will receive tickets to an exclusive nationally-televised concert event at New York’s legendary Radio City Music Hall on Sept. 24 featuring top-selling recording artists. Boost Mobile RockCorps is now recruiting members through youth-oriented TV programs, radio, websites and more.
WHEN & WHERE
Boost Mobile RockCorps is much more than a series of volunteer events and concerts – it is an “around the way revolution” that is empowering young adults with the motivation and resources necessary to create immediate, long-lasting improvements to communities in need. The movement began in June and includes volunteer events and reward concerts in Los Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis/St. Paul and Washington D.C. Additionally, more than 40 projects will be carried out in New York City from August through September. New York volunteers will earn tickets to the show at Radio City Music Hall. Tickets will not be sold for this exclusive, one-of-a-kind concert. The only way to earn a ticket is by volunteering for four hours.
HOW
Youth interested in becoming part of the Boost Mobile RockCorps movement can log onto www.boostmobilerockcorps.org for more information and to register for membership. Boost Mobile RockCorps members will be notified of opportunities in their area to volunteer and asked to commit four hours to a specific event or ongoing cause.
WHY
Based on the work done by the Greenbucks Foundation since 1993, RockCorps was created in 2002 to affect social change and act as the bridge between communities in need and the young adults who want to make them better. Since that time, RockCorps has combined the power of music, community and volunteerism to expose young people to simple ways they can proactively contribute to the greater good.
Chris Robinson, a RockCorps co-founder, is one of the most prolific and sought after music video directors in the industry. Leading artists such as Jay-Z, Busta Rhymes, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Usher and Alicia Keys have each called on Chris to lend his dynamic vision to their music. RockCorps represents the intersection of Chris' passion for music and community. A veteran of the music industry, he has experienced first hand the impact that music has on youth, culture and society as a whole.
Recognizing that the music industry owes much of its success to the grassroots support from the boroughs, downtowns and suburbs across the nation, Chris wanted to find a way to give back to those who had given so much to him. RockCorps was the perfect vehicle for Chris and his partners to support local communities, engage youth and create a lasting movement.
This year RockCorps teamed up with Boost Mobile to further bring the necessity of volunteerism to the masses. Boost Mobile is dedicated to boosting the lifestyle of today’s youth and partnering with young people to connect to their community is a natural for their brand. In Boost, RockCorps found the perfect partner to bring this program to a national stage. The pairing has created Boost Mobile RockCorps. Together, Boost Mobile and RockCorps are challenging the notion of America’s so-called “age of declining volunteerism.”
Evidence indicates that young people across the U.S. are willing and ready to give to get, and become a collectively caring community. According to research prepared by Wagner Research & Consulting for Boost Mobile, virtually all 14 to 34 year olds regardless of ethnicity, age, or gender claimed that they would prefer to earn the tickets via community service rather than pay the going rate of $100 per ticket to a concert. Further, evidence indicates that more than half of the young people return to volunteer again after the concert is over. Music has the power to bring people together and Boost Mobile RockCorps is channeling this power and helping to make volunteering cool and relevant to today’s youth.
