Sergei Lishouk: "I should play in the NBA next year"
by Jorge Sierra / August 16, 2004

How did it feel to be selected by the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA Draft?

Sergei Lishouk: I am pleased with the fact that I have been chosen by an NBA team. Certainly it is very pleasant.

Did you have any idea they were going to select you in draft night?

SL: I had no idea. I would have never guessed that I would be selected by the Memphis Grizzlies.

Do you think your draft position would have improved much had you been able to play in the Chicago Pre-Draft Camp?

SL: Certainly! I think that I would have had all the chances to be in the first round. Maybe not in the beginning, but in the first round.

Have you been in touch with the Grizzlies lately?

SL: I watched on TV that the Grizzlies chose me. And since then, I've had no contact with them.

What do you know about the team?

SL: I know that it was once based in Vancouver and that now it's a strong team in the NBA.

What are your plans regarding the NBA? How many more years do you plan to stay in Europe before trying to make it in the NBA?

SL: If all goes the way I think, I should play in the NBA next year. And not simply to sit on the bench. I mean really play!

How good is the league in Ukraine compared to the leagues in Spain or Italy?

SL: To be fair, this comparison is simply impossible – although the league has improved in the last few years.

In which areas of your game do you think you have to work on the most to become an NBA player?

SL: I need to improve my physical skills and my power forward\center skills.

It's said that your main weakness is your lack of quickness. How big of an issue would that be for you in the NBA in your opinion?

SL: Actually, with my height, I never considered myself a slow player. I can't agree with you on that.

To which NBA player would you compare yourself? Anything in common with Slava Medvedenko?

SL: I do not know. I have no idols. As for Stanislav Medvedenko, all we have in common is that we are from the same country and we both want to play in the NBA.

If you had to describe yourself in a few words, what would you say?

SL: I do not get puffed up, I'm efficient and I aspire to perfection. And I'm friendly.
