HoopsHype.com Interviews Kareem
Rush: "I've heard Phil Jackson is bad on rookies"
You almost went to college at UCLA and now youre playing with the Lakers. What does it feel like to finally be playing in Los Angeles? Kareem Rush: It feels good. Its kind of ironic that I ended up out here, but I couldnt be in a better situation. An old teammate of yours, Keyon Dooling, plays for the Clippers. Did he give you any advice about playing in LA or about what to expect? KR: I havent talked to Keyon in about a year but regardless, Im excited to be out here. LA is all about movies. If an actor was going to play you in a movie, what would be the toughest part of your game for him to learn? KR: My fade-away and my smoothness. So what actor would you want to play you if they made a movie about your life and why? KR: Denzel. Yeah. I need an attractive man to play me and I heard he can ball. Your own bio-pic would obviously be your favorite sports movie. What would be your second? KR: Any football movies. Any Given Sunday, I like that one. The Lakers fans are all about 4 lettered names for their basketball heroes, Shaq, Kobe, Fish... Rush seems to fit right in. Do you think its going to be tough? KR: Well, its not going to be easy. You know, coming to this level is not an easy thing to do, but Im looking forward to the challenge and were going to try and go out there and win another championship. No matter how hard it is, did you ever think when you stepped onto the floor as a freshman at Missouri that your next uniform would be a Lakers one? KR: No, I never thought that. I never knew what jersey I was going to put on next, but I never thought itd be a Lakers jersey. The team has such a mystique, theyre almost mythical and I cant wait to step on the court and be a part of it. Everyone knows about Shaqs chefs and all of his toys at his house. Have you hooked yourself up with any gifts yet now that youre an NBA player? KR: No, not yet. I dont make that kind of money yet. Im going to try and save mine in the beginning and then once I get my second contract thats when Ill have fun. Thats smart. Has coach Jackson given you any books to read yet? KR: Nah, man. You know, I've heard hes bad on rookies, but I havent talked to him yet. I think hes in Montana, relaxing, but I cant wait to work with him. I dont know how long youve been in Los Angeles, but Im sure you visited your brother when he played at UCLA. Which hamburger place do you like the best: In-N-Out or Fatburger? KR: Oh, I love Fatburger. My brother and I love In-N-Out, but I had Fatburger about a week ago and I just fell in love with it. Thats my new thing. No training food better than a hamburger. Is there anything special youre doing this year to get ready for the NBA that was different than from how you prepared for a new college season? KR: Yeah. Im in the NBA now. Im trying to be in the best shape I can be coming into training camp. Ive been running, working out every day and just getting myself prepared for the grind. Great. Thanks for your time and good luck with the season. Jon Finkel is a regular contributor to HoopsHype.com Tell us what you think about this interview.
