David ‘Dubi’ Pick: Carlos Arroyo is signing with Cangrejeros De Santurce in Puerto Rico, his agent confirmed.
David ‘Dubi’ Pick: Hearing that Carlos Arroyo is headed home, mulling over playing in Puerto Rico or retirement. Still loves the game.
Arroyo: We have the same example with me at the Miami Heat. I had LeBron, Wade and Boss to give the ball. Can Arroyo be the real Arroyo in a situation like that? No, he can’t. He has to be a distributor for all that players. This is a very very tough situation for guys who are used to be the elite players in their teams. Spanoulis wasn’t respected that much at Houston. But, you know Spanoulis wasn’t Spanoulis at Houston! This was the case.
Carlos Arroyo on the NBA: “It’s not only about me. You know when I was playing in the NBA I was always following Euroleague cause of my FIBA attachment and the National Team. So I knew who Spanoulis was. If I remember well It was like 2006. I was playing at Orlando. Spanoulis has landed at the Houston Rockets and he had a tough coach, Jeff Van Gundy. It was easy for me to see that this guy wasn’t his self on the court. He wasn’t happy man. I remember talking with him about this. That they tried to control your game.
Have you heard from teams this summer? Carlos Arroyo: Well, no serious interest. I don’t know what to say. The basketball world knows that I play for a team in Turkey, at least for the next year. I’ve always had an NBA out option, but this is a new contract. If I leave the team, it will be through a buyout.
Is returning to the NBA something that appeals to you? Carlos Arroyo: I know my age plays against me, I’m 35. If the opportunity arises, I will consider it. We’re talking about the best league. Right now I’m focused on Galatasaray, but if something comes out after the tournament I will consider it.

If there’s anything mysterious or remotely controversial, it would be Stockton’s description of “a stubborn undertow of friction” during his final season of 2002-03, when his teammates — not named — included Carlos Arroyo, Mark Jackson and DeShawn Stevenson. In Friday’s news conference, Stockton said that subject was worth discussing mainly because of how he chose not to address it at the time, which played into his decision to retire at age 41. In turn, he angered his wife and Malone by making his brief announcement the day after a first-round playoff series against Sacramento, rather than telling them first.
Walker Russell has signed a one month contract with Turkish giants Galatasaray. The point-guard, who has last played in Venezuela, has been signed for the absences of Carlos Arroyo, Sinan Guler, Engin Atsur and Ender Arslan, who have to play for their national basketball team.
Puerto Rico drew Brazil for their first game of the tournament, making it a matchup of the top two teams in the tournament and a likely preview of the eventual championship game. The game lived up to its billing, too, considering the score was 62-61 with 2:28 left in the game before Renaldo Balkman rattled off five straight points to help his country score an eventual 72-65 victory. Balkman, the Knicks’ first-round pick in 2006, scored 24 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots while playing 37 of the game’s 40 minutes — and he didn’t even choke a teammate in the process. Former Boston University standout John Holland added 15 points and nine rebounds while Minnesota Timberwolves dynamo J.J. Barea struggled to 12 points on 11 shot attempts, committing four turnovers in the process. Other notables on the Puerto Rican squad include Carlos Arroyo (7 points, 2-of-9 shooting), Ricky Sanchez (four points, four rebounds and four fouls) and former USC star — and current 36-year-old chucker — Larry Ayuso (two points, four fouls, five shots). The only NBA player on the Brazil roster is Utah Jazz draft pick Raul Neto because Nene, Tiago Splitter, Leandro Barbosa and Anderson Varejao all decided to sit this tournament out.
