In August 2008, Smith got a second chance. Claudia bounced back in his life, and like a rebound at the Rose Garden, Smith pounced at the opportunity. She made the first move, a tap on the shoulder at a party. Soon, there was a string of dates. A host of late-night conversations. And a growing bond that led to that nervous moment this past New Year’s Eve. “It’s like a fairy tale,” Smith says. “It’s something you realize when you are young, that there’s something about this person, but you don’t really know what that feeling is because you are so young. Then once you get older, and you see that person again, it’s like, oooooook. I get it. It’s an unexplainable feeling.”
After dinner, the moment arrived. He started to read his note. “Man, I can’t believe it’s our third New Year together. We have been through so much and have learned a lot about each other, to the point where it feels like most people who have been in a relationship for six years can’t compete with what we have. You truly have been a positive influence on me and I would like to thank you for that. Your spirit is truly one of a kind and I thank the Lord for granting an opportunity to have you in my life. Remember when I said when we were younger that I felt something but I didn’t know what it was? I know what it is. I wanted you to be my wife …” He then backed away from the table, and with a room of diners watching, he got on his knee and presented a box with a ring. He asked Claudia to marry him. “I started crying,” Claudia said. “Is that a yes?” Smith remembers asking. She nodded her head.

Joel Przybilla has been rumored to be an option for the Blazers before they added two veteran big men in Kurt Thomas and Craig Smith. At this time, Buchanan says Przybilla is not a point of focus. He’s not an option right now” Buchanan said. “Obviously our stance can change if something comes up at the last minute, but we’re not pursuing anything at this moment.”
The Portland Trail Blazers have agreed to terms with forward Craig Smith. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Smith, 28, has averaged 8.8 points and 4.2 rebounds in five seasons with Minnesota and the L.A. Clippers. “Craig is a guy who will bring us some interior scoring and toughness around the hole,” said Trail Blazers Acting General Manager Chad Buchanan. “He is a player who is hungry to experience the playoffs and we hope that Craig can help us get back to the postseason again this year.”
But apparently, the battle for bragging rights was enough to convince Gay that he would participate in the next show to determine which coast has the best players. After weeks of wrangling and tense negotiations, the Goodman League-Drew League rematch will finally take place on Sunday at Long Beach State University and Goodman League commissioner Miles Rawls confirmed that Gay would join forces with Durant, Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Michael Beasley, Sam Young and Donte Greene. Gay, Durant and Wall are also expected to participate in another exhibition game hosted by LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh on Saturday at Florida International University in Miami, but Rawls said all three would complete the difficult back-to-back set. They will meet a fired-up Drew League team eager for revenge and featuring Harden, Jennings, Nick Young, Derrick Williams, DeMar Derozan, Dorell Wright, Craig Smith, Marcus Banks and Ryan Hollins.
Craig Smith is fully behind Fisher and the union. But he also thinks the stars can bring more pressure to the table. “I think I would want to see them at the bargaining table,” Smith said last month, at the Goodman (D.C.)-Shaw League (L.A.) game in Washington. “I mean, I don’t know, I probably have a lot of people that probably agree with me, too, if we had those guys up front. Because (those are) people (who) you come to see win, every single game — [Dwyane] Wade, Carmelo, Stoudemire, KG [Kevin Garnett], you know? Those are our leading guys, every year.”
Roth said via telephone Tuesday night he was unaware of any such meeting.] But Smiley said he hopes the game will happen Oct. 1. Smiley said the proposed game would feature mostly high school, college and pro players who are L.A. natives. Although he doesn’t have a confirmed list, Smiley sounded confident that Drew League regulars such as Milwaukee’s Brandon Jennings, Toronto’s DeMar DeRozan, Oklahoma City’s James Harden, Sacramento’s Pooh Jeter, the Clippers’ Craig Smith, Washington’s JaVale McGee and Nick Young, and Golden State’s Dorell Wright would make up part of the roster.
Sam: Chris Richard always seems a possibility. As Gar Forman suggested Thursday, they’ll go with what they have now with the idea they weren’t playing Thomas, so that’s like an addition to the front line. With Boozer, Gibson, Asik and Thomas and Deng playing four on occasion, they figure for now there aren’t minutes, anyway, for someone else, and hardly anyone who would be good enough to play ahead of whom they already have. But I’ve got plenty of associate GMs on my emailing staff and some of the names suggested in trades or pickups include Craig Smith, Aaron Gray, Ryan Hollins, Derrick Brown, Joey Dorsey, Marressee Speights and Hasheem Thabeet. You’d probably have to give up J.J. in a deal, and, frankly, I’d rather keep him and get him some time before I give up on him.
