David Lighty RumorsAll NBA Players
The Hawks waived Damien Wilkins, David Lighty and Andonis Thomas Monday to trim the roster to 17 players. All three were non-roster training camp invitees.
As I wrote last week, David Lighty and Eric Dawson will be non-roster training camp invites. Andonis Thomas is likely to be another invite, although nothing is official at this point. Thomas has been working out in Atlanta this offseason. He was part of the Hawks summer league roster. The 6-foot-7 small forward, an undrafted free agent out of Memphis, appeared in three summer league games. He averaged 1.3 points and 0.3 rebounds in 9.7 minutes.

Former Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School and Ohio State shooting guard David Lighty confirmed he will play for Brooklyn’s summer-league team in Orlando. Lighty’s team in Paris, JSF Nanterre, won the French Pro A LNB championship last season.
“I’m going to play in the (Las Vegas) summer league,” David Lighty said. “I just don’t know for what team yet.”
The Bucks will hold a free-agent camp Tuesday through Thursday for players who are not draft-eligible. A total of 23 players have been invited, including 12 with previous NBA experience. Among those attending are former Utah Jazz guard Sundiata Gaines, former Philadelphia 76ers forward Craig Brackins and former New Jersey and Brooklyn Nets small forward Damion James. Former Marquette guard Dwight Buycks and former Ohio State guard David Lighty also will participate.

Bennet Cantù made official the signing for two seasons, without NBA escape, of David Ligthy. The forward spent his college career with Ohio State averaging 12.1ppg, 4rpg and 3.3apg in his senior year. The player was not drafted in 2011 and decided to accept the proposal from Cantù, one of the best teams in Italy who will play also in Euroleague.
Villa Angela-St. Joseph and Ohio State graduate David Lighty could be on the verge of heading to Europe to continue his dream of playing professional basketball. Draftexpress.com reported Lighty signed to play with Cantu, an Italian team in the Euroleague, next season. However, when reached Wednesday afternoon for comment, Lighty said there is no deal in place yet. “Nothing final yet, but probably will know for sure by the end of the week,” Lighty replied in a text message.
Bennet Cantu are looking for the ways to strengthen their backcourt. They are negotiating contract with David Lighty (195-G/F-88). The deal may be announced soon. The 23- year-old shooting guard has just graduated from the Ohio State University.
The Cavaliers, Hawks and Suns have shown interest in the Villa Angela-St. Joseph and Ohio State graduate, with Atlanta and Phoenix looking like the favorites. Lighty said he participated in the Hawks’ minicamp on Monday, and on Tuesday he was en route to Phoenix for a workout.
Lighty wasn’t interested in that scenario. “Yes, that is true. (Teams) were going to draft me if I was willing to go (overseas), but my agent and I said we would stay here,” said Lighty. Apparently, Lighty was not joking when he tweeted after last week’s draft, “U will see me in the NBA I promise u that.” Lighty confirmed Tuesday he has no intention of playing overseas.
Whether or not David Lighty makes it in the NBA, he’s determined to do it on his own terms. That disappointment toward the end of the second round in last week’s NBA draft, when players many of us had never heard of were selected and Lighty still wasn’t picked? According to Lighty, several teams were calling his agent, Joe Bell, and were prepared to take him in the second round with one condition: The teams wanted him to play overseas for a year, then return the following season.
Sam Amico: Both Atlanta and Phoenix have contacted ex-Ohio State guard David Lighty. He will be in someone’s training camp (whenever that may be).
It’s all about fit. And it seems fitting the Spurs have taken a liking to Ohio State senior David Lighty, who isn’t at Portsmouth but is high on San Antonio’s radar. He certainly fits their blueprint (professional approach, strong defender, winner, etc.). Strange that more teams don’t follow their blueprint, really.
