Paul Garcia: #Spurs just released Summer League roster: Austin Daye, Ryan Richards, Marcus Denmon, Kyle Anderson, Deshaun Thomas on the team
Deshaun Thomas: “Nanterre had a good program for me and it is a good step before joining the NBA. Pro A is a good competition and it will be interesting to play in the Euroleague. I spoke with David (Lighty, former Ohio State player) on the championship team. He told me they took good care of him, there’s a great atmosphere on the team, he had a lot of fun during the season and the city was great. It will be a good challenge for a young player like me to play the Euroleague. My goal this season is going to be to get better and win games.”
Emiliano Carchia: DeShaun Thomas will play with JSF Nanterre next season as confirmed to @GabrielPJ_CandS by the coach of the team. Next target: Travis Leslie
Joe Whelan: Thomas did state he’s pretty sure he knows where he is going (all indications are France) – but that paper work will be faxed tomorrow
Earlier, Spanish and European basketball websites reported Thomas was close to signing with Estudiantes Madrid, which plays in Spain’s top league, the Liga Endesa. But when first contacted this afternoon, Thomas said he was considering another opportunity. While we were talking, Thomas took a call from his agent, J.R. Hensley, and later said he had agreed to a contract to play for a team in Paris.
Sam Amico: It appears ex-Ohio State F and Spurs draft pick Deshaun Thomas really is off to Spain, source close to situation says. Spurs retain rights.
Joe Kotoch: A bit of Ohio State news. Hearing the Hawks, Bulls, Pistons, & Lakers like Deshaun Thomas. Solid 2nd round pick. #NBADraft
Ohio State forward Deshaun Thomas is one of the more intriguing prospects, with league executives believing he could go as high as No. 19 or drop to the middle of the second round. Some sources believe Oklahoma City won’t let Thomas drop past their 32nd overall selection.
The Nets will hold the final draft workout at their New Jersey practice facility today. The headline name among the six players who are scheduled to attend is Louisville center Gorgui Dieng, who anchored the Cardinals’ defense on their way to the national championship. The other players expected to participate are Ohio State forward Deshaun Thomas and four local products: Miami guard Durand Scott, who starred at Rice High School; USC guard Jio Fontan, who began his collegiate career at Fordham after playing high school ball with Nets guard Tyshawn Taylor at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City; St. Bonaventure forward Demetrius Conger and Division III Farmingdale State center A.J. Matthews, both of whom are Brooklyn natives.
On the heels of hiring a new general manager, the Sacramento Kings will take a look at six prospects in a pre-draft workout tomorrow. The players trying out Tuesday will likely get consideration with the Kings’ second-round pick. Of the group working out tomorrow, Lorenzo Brown and Deshaun Thomas are the only players tabbed as possible selections in next week’s draft
The Knicks have six players on tap for Monday workouts. Here’s the entire list of players they’ve worked out. • Isaiah Canaan, Guard, 6-1, 195, Murray State, Senior • Brandon Triche, Guard, 6-4, 210, Syracuse, Senior • Deshaun Thomas, Forward, 6-7, 225, Ohio State, Junior
Additionally, ASM has signed Ohio State forward Deshaun Thomas, Florida forward Erik Murphy, Temple guard Khalif Wyatt, Louisville guard Peyton Siva, Miami guard Durand Scott, UCLA guard Larry Drew II, Minnesota forward Trevor Mbakwe, and Kansas guards Elijah Johnson and Travis Releford. Miller, Stephen Pina, Andrew Vye, Justin Zanik, Steve Banks and J.R. Hensley will represent the players.
In his mind — like most players at the NBA draft combine — he thinks he’ll be a first-round pick. “I believe I can be a late first-round pick,” he said. “I have confidence. But all I’ve got to do is keep working, do what I can do. As long as I can feel like when I can walk out of that gym that I worked hard, I’ll leave it in God’s hands and everything will take care of itself.”
Thomas has been joined in his workouts by Greg Oden, who is attempting a comeback to the NBA next season. “He looks unbelievable,” Thomas said. “He’s running, lifting weights. You might be seeing a comeback. He looks like he’s ready to go. For a big 7-footer, that’s all he does, running and getting in shape. He’s looking right.”
Deshaun Thomas said teams asked him plenty of difficult and interesting questions during his interview process at the combine. But the most interesting, he said, was the fact the Spurs’ first question was for his cell phone number and his e-mail address. He gave them the e-mail, but not the phone number. “I can’t go around giving it out to everyone,” Thomas said Thursday with a laugh. “Now if they want to draft me, I’d be happy to give it to them.”
Former Ohio State forward DeShaun Thomas said part of his predraft workouts have included sessions with former Trail Blazers center Greg Oden at the St. Vincents Performance Center in Indianapolis. Oden, who played in 82 games in four seasons after being the No. 1 overall pick with the Blazers in 2007, hasn’t played since December of 2009 because of knee problems, but is working toward a comeback. “Man, he looks unbelievable,” Thomas said. “He’s running, he’s lifting weights. You might be seeing a comeback. He looks like he is ready to go. He’s running, getting in shape. I’ll tell you one thing: For a big 7-footer, that’s all he does — running and getting in shape. He’s looking right.”
