Looking back on his 18-year pro-career, Vujcic expressed a great deal of disappointment by not playing in the NBA and addressed one offer from a varsity Western Conference team he lucked out on. “I had an offer from the San Antonio Spurs but they ended up signing Fabricio Oberto instead. In retrospect, I didn’t pursue the NBA hard enough and I’m sorry I couldn’t play for San Antonio because they’re an organization I’d never turn down. Coincidently, that same season they won the NBA Championship,” Vujcic said.
Former Spurs forward Fabricio Oberto hinted in a recent interview with veteran Argentine journalist Julian Mozo that he might have an opportunity to join their coaching staff to replace the departing Mike Budenholzer. Oberto, who played on the 2007 championship team before being traded in 2009, must first finalize his retirement after a brief stint with his original club, Atenas of Argentina. Oberto told Mozo that he turned down an offer to enter coaching last year. Now, he said, another team has offered him an opportunity “to start at the bottom” but declined to offer details. Oberto said he has maintained contact with Spurs general manager R.C. Buford, who has apparently told him there’d be a spot with the team in some capacity if he was ever interested. Oberto, 38, was seen at the team practice facility in early May before the Spurs began their second-round series with Golden State.
