The Knicks are mulling whether to use one of their two roster spots on power forward Ike Diogu, who impressed the team during training camp but was released, according to an NBA source.
According to a source, NBA veteran Ike Diogu will play in the NBA D-League. Diogu will be cleared Wednesday, and the most likely landing spots for Diogu are Bakersfield, Iowa, or Tulsa. Diogu was most recently waived by the New York Knicks (Oct. 25). The 6’10″, 250 pound power forward will take 7 years of NBA experience with him to the NBADL ranks.
Coach Mike Woodson has admitted J.R. Smith’s presence was a factor in keeping him on the roster over another big man such as Ike Diogu. Though the Knicks haven’t yet reached the tax status as “repeat’’ offenders, they are so far over the luxury-tax threshold, the last few spots on their roster are costing them a fortune. Each additional contract dollar is taxed by a ratio of 3.25. The Knicks’ payroll stands at more than $87 million and the tax threshold is $71.7 million.
Power forward Ike Diogu, who was among the Knicks’ final cuts in training camp in October, could be re-signed. But the Knicks likely would have to cut Chris Smith – J.R.’s brother – to free up a spot on the 15-man roster. Earl Barron, who appeared in one game for the Knicks last season, also is a free agent after recently leaving his team in China.
If things become a disaster, the Knicks will seriously consider 6-foot-8 power forward Ike Diogu, who had a solid training camp with the Knicks before getting released. The Nigerian native out of Buffalo rebounded ferociously and showed a consistent mid-range jumper. After cutting him, Woodson said he wanted more size.
New York Knickerbockers President and General Manager Steve Mills announced today that the team has waived forwards Ike Diogu, C.J. Leslie, Josh Powell and Jeremy Tyler and guard Chris Douglas-Roberts.
Jared Zwerling: Source: #Knicks have cut Josh Powell and Ike Diogu. Hearing the team wants to go younger. I’m expecting Toure Murry to make the team.

Jared Zwerling: Heard Knicks were close to releasing Diogu (wasn’t practicing a lot) but strong outing vs. BOS changed that. Concern w/ Cole’s physicality.
Diogu and Josh Powell are with Aldrich, in play for one of the big man spots. But Diogu and the physical Powell are power forwards and not centers. Powell, a veteran with an NBA body, might be more effective than one of the younger guys who haven’t shown that much. But Woodson said the Knicks haven’t figured out if they will keep one or two big men. “We haven’t addressed that yet,” Woodson said. “I know one has an opportunity to make it. There won’t be any decisions made soon because we’re still banged up with Kenyon and Amar’e. Those guys will get an opportunity and a fair shot to ride it all the way through pretty much. Then we’ll make a decision
The New York Knicks have signed veteran forward Ike Diogu, who has been out of the NBA for nearly all of the last two seasons. The team announced the move Friday.
The Knicks will add veteran forwards Ike Diogu and Josh Powell to their training camp roster, league sources said. Both were part of the group of free agents who had a two-day workout with the Knicks last week. Neither will get any guaranteed money, but will sign make-good contracts.
Ike Diogu will land in Puerto Rico next week. Former NBA forward will land in Puerto Rico on Tuesday and on Wednesday will start practice with the team. Diogu has played the season in Chinese CBA with Guangdong averaging 16.6ppg and 10.4rpg in 31 regular season games.
Paul Coro: The #Suns waived Ike Diogu & Solomon Jones. Luke Zeller & Diante Garrett likely will make the roster. Story to come on azcentral.com.
The most pressing decision comes in choosing a big man among local favorite Ike Diogu, another NBA veteran in Solomon Jones or rookie sharpshooter Luke Zeller. More than choosing which player performs best, the Suns likely will end up choosing which player’s style suits them best.
The Suns might replace a Wildcat with the Sun Devil who was drafted one pick after him seven years ago. Former Arizona State star power forward Ike Diogu was added to the Suns’ training camp roster.
“We all come from the same place,” he said, tracing his team’s roots beyond America. “A lot of these guys here, we’re all from the same background, our parents are from the same place. A lot of these guys on the team speak more than one language.”
Ikechukwu Somtochukwu Diogu was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and raised in Texas of Nigerian-born parents. Though Diogu had not been to Nigeria since 2001, he relates to the country and its diverse cultures. “Even though I grew up in the United States, I was always around Nigerians,” he said. “I grew up in a Nigerian community. When I’m at home, my parents don’t speak to me in English. We eat Nigerian food.” He listed a menu that included jollof rice, fufu and chin chin. “But you probably don’t know what I’m talking about,” he said.
