Now with the D-League’s Texas Legends, however, Johnson’s fiery attitude has cost him a one-game suspension. The official release: The NBA Development League today announced that Texas Legends forward Ivan Johnson has been suspended for one game for making contact with a referee during a Dec. 9 game at the Austin Spurs. The incident occurred with 3:54 remaining in the second quarter of the game and resulted in Johnson being issued a technical foul.

The rich just get richer, right? Well, that’s not always the case in the NBA D-League even though it may seem that way when a player like Ivan Johnson lands in the laps of the Texas Legends, a team who already boasts one of the more talented rosters in the NBADL. Texas was given an order priority due to the fact Ish Smith has been called up for 21 consecutive days. It is a rule in the NBADL that essentially propels a team that may have lost a top talent (i.e. an NBA Call-Up), into the top position of the waiver list in order to have first choice of any player available in the NBA D-League Player Pool. Often times, teams will communicate with agents and players about their waiver order position in order to secure them. Even more, players have been known to wait out periods of time to ensure they’ll be selected by a certain NBADL team. There has been no indication that the Legends did this specifically regarding Johnson, but it pays to know where you stand as far as order priority goes if you’ve had a player called up for 21 days. Essentially, a team could time it right when a player of their liking becomes available in the NBA D-League player pool.
