While Belinelli’s best season statistically was 2013-14, when he shot 48 percent from the field and 43 percent beyond the arc during the Spurs championship run, he began tinkering with his shooting motion three years earlier in New Orleans. “I was shooting off-balance a lot of time,” he said, “but I worked on that a lot, just a lot of repetition, a lot of shooting. And I work very hard at moving without the ball. I want to be a complete player, not just a shooter.”
“He is thinking too much,” veteran guard Marco Belinelli said. “When he is open, take a shot. Play how he can play. He can run the floor, and he understands the philosophy. I’m happy to help him because he’s a really good guy.” Belinelli offered his own career as an analogy. Drafted 18th overall by Golden State in 2007 after playing professionally in Italy, he battled inconsistency during two seasons with the Warriors and another with the Toronto Raptors. After being traded again, to New Orleans in 2010, he flourished in a backcourt with Chris Paul, one of the league’s premier playmakers.
Q: The “stupid” trade was the one that sent Jason Thompson, Carl Landry and Nik Stauskas to Philadelphia. You received no players who will be on the roster this season and could have to swap picks with the 76ers in the near future. Was the thinking that the team didn’t need more young players and you needed salary cap room? Vlade Divac: I liked all three guys. Nik, Carl and Jason all did a good job for this organization, and Nik is a guy I think can have a decent career in the NBA. But the idea was we gave up Nik, Carl and Jason and we got (Kostas) Koufos, Belinelli and Rondo (in free agency). That’s a pretty good trade, right? It’s pretty simple.
During the summer, Butler joined Kings coach George Karl, point guard Rajon Rondo, guard Marco Belinelli, and other new players, for dinner in Las Vegas. Talking about about a dinner that was attended by Kings players DeMarcus Cousins, Omri Casspi, and new comers Rajon Rondo and Marco Belinelli, including head coach George Karl, Butler sounded as if accountability will be a big part of the season. “We just talked about laying a foundation about how we want to move forward,” Butler said. “And guys said all the right things and kind of aired out some issues that they had. And the participation in the voluntary workouts, we’ve been getting to know each other. I feel like it’s going to be a really good year for us and guys are just buying into winning and that’s what we need.”
Belinelli was one of the leaders of the Italian National Team at Eurobasket. Italy qualified to one of the Olympic Qualifying Tournaments. And the guard already said he will play for the Italian next July. “We were a great team at Eurobasket. We did not play well the first game against Turkey but then we reacted” Belinelli said to Il Resto del Carlino. “We all play the Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Olympic Games are special and we want to bring Italy back to Olympics” added Belinelli.
