They are in negotiations with guard J.J. Barea, who they want to keep. It also appears Jeremy Lin, who began his NBA journey on a Mavericks’ summer-league team, is in the Mavericks’ crosshairs. The problem is that all the Mavericks have to spend is the $2.8-million salary-cap exception and minimum contracts. They could create another $2.6-million if they were to waive point guard Raymond Felton under the stretch provision, where he is paid his final year’s salary over several years.

The Mavericks are close to striking a deal to re-sign veteran guard J.J. Barea and still have Raymond Felton on the books, but Lin has emerged as Dallas’ top free-agent priority at this point after the team landed Jordan and Matthews. One possibility, sources said, is that the Mavericks could waive-and-stretch Felton’s contract if they get a commitment from Lin to create a salary slot of $2.6 million.

Based on analytical projections, Russell has been compared to accomplished NBA players, including MVP runner-up James Harden. Among players drafted in the last 10 years, SPM sees Russell as having a similar floor/ceiling coming out of college as Deron Williams, Derrick Rose, Jrue Holiday and Raymond Felton. As much as analytics love Russell, it is also important to recognize that SPM predicts a high probability of him being a bust. Among SPM’s top 25 projected players, Russell has the highest bust likelihood, at 40.9 percent.

The problem for the Mavs is that they aren’t likely to have the full midlevel exception ($5.46 million) and the cap-room exception ($2.81 million) probably won’t be enough to pay Aminu market value. In other words, the Mavs should plan on needing to use some of their precious cap space to pay Aminu. The Mavs will explore options to dump Raymond Felton’s $3.95 million in a trade, preferring to use that money to pay Aminu. If the Mavs can’t move Felton in a deal, they could opt to waive him via the stretch provision, which would chop two-thirds of his salary off the team’s 2015-16 cap, creating a chunk of space that could help keep Aminu.

Dallas would insist that the Clippers also take reserve point guard Raymond Felton, who was the Tyson Tax in last summer’s trade with the New York Knicks. Felton earned a lot of respect from the Mavs with his approach last season, when the longtime starter stayed ready despite playing sparingly, but they’d still like to dump his $3.9 million salary after he officially exercises his player option for next season.
