“As me signing with the Knicks became more and more plausible, there definitely was a lot of talk among our friends mostly,” Robin says by the side of the court. “They’re the ones that do all the trash-talking. It’s like ‘Oh, Robin said this, Brook said that.’ They instigate it.” But the ranks of observers—and instigators—have grown well beyond the twins’ friends. In a city that considers itself basketball’s mecca, where playground and high school ball is played at the highest of levels, the professional game has been marked by almost unceasing failure. The New Jersey Nets sucked, then moved to Brooklyn and became merely mediocre. The Knicks sucked to the extent that the New York Times stopped covering them last season. So the city’s notoriously savage sports media is eager for this drama: 27-year-old twins leading feuding teams that are both desperate for a boost.

New York Knicks president Phil Jackson believes Carmelo Anthony will be able to play power forward this season when paired with Robin Lopez. “One of the reasons why we really thought Robin would be the best fit for us as a center was that it would allow us to be more flexible as a team and Carmelo can play more of a ‘4’,” Jackson said on Friday. “As opposed to maybe a Greg Monroe who is not the same size, not the same defensive player.”
Twin brothers and NBA players Brook Lopez and Robin Lopez of Fresno donated $25,000 to the rebuilding effort at Storyland/Playland, the family and child amusement park in Fresno’s Roeding Park that’s focused on literacy and education. The Lopez brothers graduated from San Joaquin Memorial High School in Fresno before going on to play college basketball at Stanford and being picked in the 2008 NBA draft. Robin Lopez currently plays for the New York Knicks and Brook Lopez for the Brooklyn Nets.
