On Friday, the latest installment in a series of near-brawls came with 3:17 left in a 122-113 Suns win. Phoenix led by nine when Lakers guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope continued to harass point guard Tyler Ulis after a timeout was called. Ulis and Caldwell-Pope started shoving and the well-rehearsed choreography began again. It was on display Oct. 20, when Devin Booker fouled Corey Brewer on a breakaway dunk and Larry Nance Jr. arrived to wallop Booker with a shoulder. Episode 2 came Monday in Pheonix, when Booker began yapping at the Lakers bench after he said a Lakers assistant coach talked trash. “I think because of the fact we’ve played three games in a short period of time it’s kind of like a playoff series,” Coach Luke Walton said. “By game 3, 4, 5 things start to get a little chippy.”
Phoenix Suns interim coach Jay Triano is hoping to help Tyler Ulis and Mike James make their shots, and one plan has both of them playing off the ball, which means Devin Booker will initiate the offense at times during a game. “We’re looking at some sets where they can be off the ball sometimes,” Triano told AZcentral.com. “I think what teams are doing now is they’re hugging everybody else and making them have to make plays. It’s my responsibility to put them in situations where they’re off the ball and we have different ball handlers and they have to be ready to shoot it when they get it.”

Second-year point guard Tyler Ulis and rookie forward Alec Peters will not participate in summer league. Ulis in May had surgery on his right ankle and just recently started doing spot shooting and light running. Peters – selected with the 54th pick of last week’s draft – is not available because of a right-foot injury. Both Ulis and Peters are expected to be ready for training camp in October.
