Canaan, who was signed on Dec. 13, had been a solid pickup for Phoenix, averaging 8.9 points, 3.9 assists and 2.4 rebounds in 22.9 minutes per game. He had supplanted Tyler Ulis as the backup to Booker since Booker was made the starting point guard. “It hurts, man,” Booker said. “Isaiah is a guy I’ve known from high school. He’s from Mississippi, also. He comes in here, fights every day, comes in here and earns a spot. To take a tough break like this, it hurts. It hurt me.”
Second-year forward Dragan Bender is shooting 48 percent from 3-point range over the past eight games, but Triano said he’s not inclined to move Bender into the starting lineup in an effort to get more spacing into the offense. Booker is the only Suns starter shooting better than 35 percent from 3-point range. Tyler Ulis is shooting 20 percent, T.J. Warren 11.1 percent and Marquese Chriss is 2 for 7 in the past four games. “I can’t say I haven’t thought about it,” Triano said. “But I think he’s been thriving in his role right now. I think our bench players kind of know each other and play together well. I think as a team evolves over the years a lot of that has to do with how familiar guys are with one another. Where he wants the ball, when he’s going to cut, when he’s not going to cut. We’re pretty (good) with that with our second unit. So I like the way they play together.”
On Friday, the latest installment in a series of near-brawls came with 3:17 left in a 122-113 Suns win. Phoenix led by nine when Lakers guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope continued to harass point guard Tyler Ulis after a timeout was called. Ulis and Caldwell-Pope started shoving and the well-rehearsed choreography began again. It was on display Oct. 20, when Devin Booker fouled Corey Brewer on a breakaway dunk and Larry Nance Jr. arrived to wallop Booker with a shoulder. Episode 2 came Monday in Pheonix, when Booker began yapping at the Lakers bench after he said a Lakers assistant coach talked trash. “I think because of the fact we’ve played three games in a short period of time it’s kind of like a playoff series,” Coach Luke Walton said. “By game 3, 4, 5 things start to get a little chippy.”
