Attended the South Division HS in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Played college ball at Wisconsin-Stevens Point until 1985. Selected by the Portland Trail Blazers as 24th overall pick in the 1985 NBA Draft. Played in Portland from 1985-86 to 1994-95. His rights were renounced by the Blazers. Signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 1995-96. Played in Minnesota until 1997-98. Hired by the Miami Heat in 1998-99. Signed with the San Antonio Spurs in 1999-00. Retired at the end of the 2001-02 season and was hired by the Sacramento Kings as assistant coach. Named head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks in August 2003. Became a TV analyst for the Spurs in 2005-06. Named assistant coach by the Detroit Pistons in August 2006 Named head coach by the Phoenix Suns in 2008-09. Hired by the Blazers as a TV analyst in October 2010. Portland Trail Blazers all-time assists leader. Selected to the All-Star Game in 1991 and 1993. Won the 1999 McDonald's Open Championship with the San Antonio Spurs.
