Cardinal, 35, is a free agent after 12 years in the league. He knows his NBA days are numbered. He hopes they're not yet expired. “I'd like to play another year and see where that goes, but at the same time I understand it' a crazy business,” Cardinal said after the Purdue alumni game Saturday at Mackey Arena. “I'm awfully thankful for the previous 12 years. I've played longer than anybody would have expected, myself included. If I can sneak out another year, it'd be great.” news-sentinel.com

The Dallas Mavericks have re-signed veteran forward Brian Cardinal. The defending NBA champions announced the move Monday. Terms of the deal weren't released, but Cardinal will likely get the veteran minimum of just over $1.3 million. FOXSports.com

Carter will not officially clear waivers until Monday afternoon, which means that's the earliest he will be able to sign his contract. There have been no complications with the deal and all signs point to a signing Monday. Carter's deal will be for the mid-level exception, which for the Mavericks will be $3 million because they have nudged into luxury-tax territory. It will go on the books as a three-year deal although years two and three are only partially guaranteed. Dallas Morning News

In addition, agent Mark Bartelstein said the Mavericks have begun talks about retaining both Cardinal and Stevenson. "I think there are a lot of good players out there this year, and it seems like an aggressive market," said Bartelstein, who has a large stable of NBA players. "You can wait for next year, and some teams will. But no question this is still a win-now league." Dallas Morning News

Pending official approval of the new labor deal, Cardinal will begin the process of landing a new contract. He’s a free agent after winning an NBA championship with Dallas last season and received a positive vibe from Mavericks management at the end of last season. “I hope (to return to Dallas), but time will tell,” Cardinal said. “…If not, we’ll try to keep this thing rolling.” Post-Tribune

In just a few short months, Brian Cardinal has gone from World Champion to intern. Purdue announced Monday that Cardinal, who helped the Dallas Mavericks win the 2011 NBA Finals, will serve as an athletics department intern until the league’s lockout is completed. Cardinal will work with the John Purdue Club and John R. Wooden Leadership Institute and also mentor student-athletes. He will work in event coordination on projects including the 2012 NCAA Women’s Basketball tournament and the Big Ten Wrestling championships. Sporting News

If the NBA reaches a labor agreement, Cardinal likely will re-sign with the Mavericks for what would be left of the 2011-12 season. If not, he would love to help his alma mater. Cardinal has had unofficial, preliminary discussions with athletic director Morgan Burke and other Purdue officials. Basketball coach Matt Painter discussed one of his assistant coaching vacancies in the spring with Cardinal, who was in the NBA playoffs at the time. "That's just part of the process while we are working our way through this . . . talking with Morgan and talking with Matt and (associate athletic director) Nancy Cross," said Cardinal, who was the featured guest at Wednesday night's Covington Classic Coaches vs. Cancer fundraising dinner at the Beef House Restaurant. "It's admirable that they're fighting for the guys not in the league yet, but is it smart? That's the big question," another team executive told me recently. "They're fighting for Harrison Barnes. They're fighting for Austin Rivers. They're fighting for Andre Drummond. But the thing that they're missing is, why aren't they fighting for Willie Green right now? Why aren't they fighting for Brian Cardinal? Willie Green will never make up those two weeks. Brian Cardinal will never make up those two weeks they just lost. And at what point will these guys say, 'We've got to fight?'" CBSSports.com
