Before the Big Three could make it past the trade deadline, Allen-to-the-Grizzlies had to fall apart and discussions on a deal that would have sent Paul Pierce to the New Jersey Nets for an expiring Mehmet Okur contract and a lottery pick never reached completion, league sources said. Celtics general manager Danny Ainge loves the talent in the 2012 NBA draft, but he still gets one more run, one more chance with this group in the Eastern Conference playoffs. Yahoo! Sports

Whatever happened, Magic management evidently refused to buy Howard’s abrupt back flip until he signed a document opting in. That’s why, Thursday at noon, three hours before the deadline, Smith and Nets GM Billy King were real close to firming up a trade. No other team was involved. It would’ve been Brook Lopez, MarShon Brooks, Mehmet Okur’s expiring contract and two or three (lottery- unprotected; at least in one case) No. 1 picks for Howard. New York Post

New Jersey is engaged in serious discussions with the Portland Trail Blazers on a deal to bring Gerald Wallace to the Nets, according to sources with knowledge of the talks. The deal as currently constituted, sources say, would send the expiring contract of Nets forward Mehmet Okur and either Shawne Williams or Johan Petro -- along with a protected future first-round pick -- to the Blazers for Wallace. When Brook Lopez went down with a stress fracture in his right foot, it left the Nets with a gaping hole at center. But for Mehmet Okur, who the Nets acquired to replace him, it was an opportunity to prove he’s ready to be a healthy and productive player again. “I’m happy and excited to be here, and to be able to play with Deron Williams again.” Okur said after practicing with his new teammates for the first time yesterday. “It’s good to be here, a good feeling.” New York Post
