When Brook Lopez went down with a stress fracture in his right foot, it left the Nets with a gaping hole at center. But for Mehmet Okur, who the Nets acquired to replace him, it was an opportunity to prove he’s ready to be a healthy and productive player again. “I’m happy and excited to be here, and to be able to play with Deron Williams again.” Okur said after practicing with his new teammates for the first time yesterday. “It’s good to be here, a good feeling.” New York Post

Jody Genessy: Initial reaction by Jazz players was shock. They didn't see trade coming. Memo will be missed for sarcasm, jokes and locker room presence. Twitter

The business part: The seven-year Jazz center was dealt to the New Jersey Nets in exchange for a valuable trade exception — the key to the deal for Utah — and the team's 2015 second-round draft pick. The personal part: Miller thanked Okur — fondly called "Memo" and / or "Money" in these parts — for his dedicated play and effort and because he'd "given everything he had" to the Jazz since 2004. Miller expressed gratitude that Okur, who worked hard to rehab his injured back and surgically repaired Achilles tendon to 100 percent strength, "played hurt when a lot of guys would not have." Miller also told Okur that the Jazz "appreciate everything he did." They hope he remembers how important he was to the success of the franchise family. Deseret News

Larry Coon, an NBA salary cap expert and ESPN.com contributor, said the exception Utah acquired via Okur’s trade will initially count toward the team’s 2011-12 cap level. The Tribune reported last week the Jazz are expected to enter the season with a team payroll of about $64 million to $66 million, placing the franchise above the $58 million cap but below the $70 million luxury tax. The Jazz recently used part of their mid-level exception to sign Howard, adding depth at small forward. Salt Lake Tribune

At practice today, Williams told reporters that the Nets' free agent acquisition, DeShawn Stevenson, was "definitely one of my suggestions'' to GM Billy King. It seems reasonable to assume getting Okur was another of Williams' suggestions. Newark Star-Ledger
