HoopsHype Mike James rumors

April 16, 2015 Updates

Vince Carter, who's 38 now, developed the habit in recent years of taking a cab to road games with a coach to shoot at 3 pm. This is about an hour and a half earlier than anybody else. Mike James, a player I have worked with for nive years, wakes up at 5 am to find a yoga studio in the city where he's playing to practice Bikram yoga before shootaround. I changed his life about four months ago when I explained to him what Uber was so he wasn't constantly wondering if he would be able to catch a cab. I gave my client John Lucas III the nickname "I have to go" because of his innate ability to get up from any table in any city at anytime and simply look at whoever he might be with (he's done this to me 100 times) and say "I have to go" and head right back to his hotel room. Like if John was in the movie Hangover right before they clinked the glasses and then the next scene is them waking up in the hotel room with a Tiger walking around. John would have looked at the group and he'd say 10 times out of 10 "I have to go" and he'd leave. HoopsHype

James enthusiastically added that believes in the D-League. While in previous seasons, the vet has had to find his way and be a teacher of sorts amongst the younger prospects in the league, he has benefitted this year from playing alongside fellow NBA alums like Damion James, Renaldo Balkman, and Doron Lamb. "It helps a lot," James said. "It's easier to play the game when you have bonafide veterans playing with you, instead of guys who come in and just hope to contribute by simply by scoring. Playing with these guys makes it easier for me." Ridiculous Upside

The New York Knicks, by signing Louis Amundson to a 10-day contract Saturday, have just expanded the NBA’s all-time 10-team club to an even dozen. Amundson was promptly waived by the Knicks earlier this week after they acquired him from Cleveland as part of the three-team swap with Memphis and Oklahoma City headlined by J.R. Smith, Iman Shumpert and Dion Waiters. But by resigning him, New York has given Amundson the opportunity to join the following exclusive list Below are the only 12 players in league history to have played for at least 10 different teams: 12 teams: Chucky Brown, Jim Jackson, Tony Massenburg and Joe Smith. 11 teams: Mike James and Kevin Ollie. 10 teams: Lou Amundson, Earl Boykins, Mark Bryant, Drew Gooden, Damon Jones and Aaron Williams. At 39 years old, Legends point guard Mike James is the oldest active player in the D-League … or the NBA. In his 17th pro season, he has crisscrossed through 11 NBA rosters since 2001 and remains convinced he can play there again. "I may have one, two more years left," the 6-2 James said recently. "I still believe that I'm one of the 300 best that's in the world." The only NBA player older than him is the sidelined Steve Nash at 40. The D-League couldn't confirm James is its oldest player ever. USA Today Sports

Basketball vagabond Mike James, most recently of the Chicago Bulls, has put his mansion-estate in Houston on the market at $7.499 million. The gated compound, well-equipped for the modern athlete, features a detached sports complex, complete with an NBA regulation basketball court, a fitness center and hydrotherapy immersion tanks on nearly four acres in Rivercrest. Entered through a grand foyer, the 9,286 square feet of living space sports vaulted interiors with hardwood and marble flooring, detailed molding and stone fireplace. Among amenities is a game room with a wet bar, a media room and an office/retreat. There’s also two kitchens. The master suite, one of 11 bedrooms and 10.5 bathrooms, has dual vanities and a pair of soaking tubs. A detached guest house adds an additional 2,000 square feet. Outdoors, a sunken pool and spa separate the main residence and guest home. A pair of putting greens with sand traps and a water hazard complete the park-like setting. Los Angeles Times

The Bulls quickly moved on, working to finalize an agreement with Pau Gasol. League sources said a sign-and-trade acquisition has been discussed with the Lakers in order for the Bulls to land the All-Star center from Spain. Though the Lakers would have to nimbly execute several transactions that started with Friday's agreement to trade for the Rockets' Jeremy Lin, a league source indicated the Bulls have discussed sending Mike Dunleavy and the non-guaranteed contracts of Mike James, Lou Amundsen and Ronnie Brewer to the Lakers. The Bulls also are making available the non-guaranteed contracts of Mike James, Ronnie Brewer and Lou Amundsen — totaling $4 million — in all talks. If some or all of them were needed to acquire Afflalo, this could limit the Bulls’ preferred scenario of acquiring Anthony via sign-and-trade discussions with the Knicks. Chicago Tribune

It appears the Bulls aren't completely done with their late-season roster maneuvers. A pair of veterans who have played for the team in the past, point guard Mike James and power forward Lou Amundson, will be signing with the Bulls in the near future, according to a league source. James played for the Bulls earlier this season and Amundson, who played for New Orleans earlier in the campaign, was briefly on the team last season. Both players would be playoff-eligible because neither was on an NBA roster on March 1. CSN Chicago

When Mike James' 10-day contract with the Bulls expired in January, the veteran guard said he hoped to return and coach Tom Thibodeau said James always stayed ready. Thursday will be that day. James will sign for the remainder of the season and be eligible for the playoffs, sources said. That will bring the Bulls' roster to 14 players and provide insurance should Kirk Hinrich or D.J. Augustin suffer an injury or foul trouble. Chicago Tribune
