The Dallas Mavericks intend to call up veteran guard Mike James from the D-League's Texas Legends this week to sign him to a 10-day contract, according to sources with knowledge of the team's plans. James has played only one game with the Legends, but sources told ESPN.com that he quickly convinced the Mavericks that he can help address the team's lack of veteran leadership in the backcourt after the departure of Derek Fisher last month. Mike James: Well, I was talking to the Mavericks, and I guess before they make their decision, they want to see me in a few D-League games. I'm pretty sure a lot of General Managers would want to see me play before signing a deal. It's unfortunate that I have to go this way. But at the same time, if I want to keep pursuing my basketball career, this is the situation I've been placed in. I have no choice. I'm ready to accept and overcome this challenge. I'm looking at it differently than I did last year. I'm ready to just go out and play some basketball, which I enjoy doing. Ridiculous Upside

In an attempt to convince the Dallas Mavericks that he can help them, veteran point guard Mike James is joining the D-League's Texas Legends in time for Saturday's game against Tulsa, according to sources with knowledge of the deal. After playing for 10 NBA teams, most recently last season with the Chicago Bulls, James has cleared the D-League waiver process to become eligible to sign with the Legends as a free agent. ESPN.com

Agent Bernie Lee said Mike James is a candidate to sign minimum deal with Knicks. “It seems like a pretty logical thing,’’ Lee said of James, who could be third point behind Jeremy Lin and Jason Kidd. Lee noted James won a title with Detroit in 2004 when Knicks coach Mike Woodson was a Pistons assistant. Lee said Chicago, where James finished last season, also has maintained interest in bringing back James. Sulia

The Bulls signed guard Mike James for the remainder of the season. It's James' fourth stint and would have happened even if Rose and C.J. Watson were fully healthy, sources said. "We liked what he brought to our team before," Thibodeau said. "He gives us the flexibility to play two point guards. He has size, veteran experience. He knows what we're doing, is good insurance." No and no. Thibodeau was talking about Mike James. It’s likely, unless another team snatches him up first, that the Bulls re-acquire the 36-year-old point guard later this month, along with a bargain-priced veteran backup big man. Something more significant is unlikely to occur. “When you study personnel, you also study the make-up of the players and can they fit in. Our management’s going to study what’s available and as I mentioned before, if we don’t do anything, we feel very good about the people that we have,” he said. “[Thibodeau and the Bulls’ front office] talk every day. Their job is to study the league, field calls and often times, if you have a good team, you have good players, people want them, they call. That doesn’t mean we’re going to do anything. We listen and if we think it can make the team better, we’ll consider it. If not, we’re more than happy with the roster that we have. We feel very good about that.” CSN Chicago

Tom Thibodeau announced at Bulls shoot around this morning that the team has released backup point guard Mike James. James has served two stints with the Bulls this season, most recently signing a 10-day contract in the wake of Derrick Rose's back injury. Chicago Sun-Times

His best game came in a Feb. 18 loss to the New Jersey Nets when he had 16 points and seven assists. Thibodeau did not rule out the possibility of James returning to the Bulls later this season. "There's always that chance," Thibodeau said. "I think the one thing he did a great job for us in both stints. The one thing: Mike stays ready. You can count on that part and then if there's the need, we wouldn't hesitate to bring him back." Chicago Sun-Times
