Denver Nuggets forward Al Harrington underwent surgery to fix a torn meniscus in his right knee on Wednesday. Harrington is expected to be back on the court in time for summer workouts. A key reserve, Harrington hurt his knee in a win over the Orlando Magic on April 1, but played through the persistent pain down the stretch. He averaged 14 points and six rebounds during the regular season. Denver Post

Al Harrington will continue to play through knee pain. "It's still sore, no matter how much rest I have," Harrington said of his torn meniscus. "We have no excuses not to come out with a lot of energy. ... I've always said that if I can walk, I can play. I got that attitude from being on a veteran team in Indiana with Antonio Davis, Dale Davis, Reggie Miller, seeing those guys and the stuff they would go through — broken fingers, fractured wrists — and they still would find a way to play." Wilson Chandler (hip strain) didn't play Wednesday — and coach George Karl said the forward is doubtful for Friday — meaning Denver will be without Chandler's 10.7 points per game as the team tries desperately to crack the postseason. Karl said that "if and when" Chandler gets back, he will be in a similar situation to that of Al Harrington, who is playing with torn meniscus. "His hip is not going to heal this year," Karl said of Chandler. "But can he play and be effective?" Denver Post

Of all the good to come out of the Nuggets' lopsided victory over Golden State Monday night, one thing stung. Al Harrington's knee injury. "Of all of the injuries," coach George Karl said Tuesday after practice. "That one hurt." Harrington told The Denver Post he has a torn meniscus. The Nuggets injury report Tuesday called Harrington's injury a knee sprain, a more generic term that doesn't reveal what ligament is injured, nor to what degree. Still, Harrington could be staring at a reduced role or sitting out altogether depending on how serious the injury is. Either way it's a big blow to a team battling for one of the last playoff spots with nine games to go. The Nuggets host Northwest Division foe Minnesota on Wednesday night. Denver Post

Nuggets forward Al Harrington left Monday night’s game against Golden State at the end of the third quarter and did not return. Afterward he revealed he has a torn meniscus. His loss would be devastating to the Nuggets’ bench and locker room, as he’s been one of the team’s best players and leaders all season long. He’s also been durable, playing in all 57 games this season with averages of roughly 14 points and six rebounds, despite nagging injuries all year long. Denver Post

The old men were so ancient that — gasp! — they were in their late 30s. But Chris Mullin and Sam Perkins were, to be fair, almost twice the age of 18-year-old rookie Al Harrington on the 1998-99 Indiana Pacers. After the Nuggets' practice Monday, Harrington was asked about teammate Danilo Gallinari's shooting slump. Harrington promptly quoted the two elderly sages who advised him in his younger years. "They'd say: 'Keep shooting. You're only one shot away from being on fire,' " Harrington said. "You make one, feel good about yourself, the next one will go down, and you'll be back to being yourself." Denver Post

So on opening night, will Al Harrington be the Nuggets' starting power forward? Will he even be a member of the Nuggets? Or will he return to his reserve role? The veteran power forward, who makes about $6 million a year, is a candidate for an "amnesty" cut, which means Denver can cut a player — and though it still has to pay him, he doesn't go against the cap. "My thing is, at the end of day, it's a business," Harrington said. "The lockout taught us that once again. I understand that if Nene doesn't sign back, and it's an extremely young team, it might be time for me to go. Or it may not. The feeling I get is that I'm going to be here and they look for me to be a leader to the young guys." Denver Post

Al Harrington's contract ($6.2 million this season, $27 million over four) would be a possible contract to consider. Ujiri wouldn't speak publicly about this, but it's possible that with all of Denver's cap space, the team won't utilize the amnesty rule this season. One other business move would be the re-signing of well-liked reserve Gary Forbes. The undrafted rookie played some significant minutes last season. Forbes is an unrestricted free agent but said "the feeling I got" from the Nuggets was that they would bring him back. "I wouldn't want it anyway," the guard/forward said. "That's the team that took a chance on me when no one else did." Denver Post

On Saturday, Denver Nuggets player Al Harrington took the Bugsy Challenge at Burger Joint at Flamingo Las Vegas. The Bugsy Challenge consists of a burger with six one-third- pound burger patties, six types of cheese (American, cheddar, pepper jack, fresh house-made mozzarella, Swiss and panko-crusted deep-fried provolone), chorizo, sautéed mushrooms, black and tan onion rings, three strips of applewood smoked bacon, three strips of cayenne peppered bacon and a fried egg, all oozing with Burger Joint’s special pink peppercorn aioli. I’m hearing there’s a chance some current Warriors and some ex-Warriors could be getting together for a charity basketball game later in October. Apparently, plans are in the works to get a game together between current Warriors and the “We Believe” Warriors from 2007. Still trying to nail down some details, but Baron Davis, Matt Barnes, Jason Richardson and Stephen Jackson all might be playing for the “We Believe” team. Maybe Al Harrington, too. CSNBayArea.com
