It could be another two weeks before New Orleans Hornets rookie forward Anthony Davis recovers sufficiently from a stress reaction in his left ankle to resume playing. Davis said Sunday after the team's shootaround at a downtown hotel that a precautionary MRI following three ankle sprains in as many days revealed the problem, which is a precursor to a more serious stress fracture that would likely manifest itself without rest and rehabilitation. For the third time in four days, New Orleans Hornets rookie forward Anthony Davis tweaked his left ankle but he is expected to start Tuesday night against the New York Knicks. Hornets Coach Monty Williams said Davis turned his ankle during Monday's practice at the Alario Center. "He turned his ankle a little bit, but I'm not sure what he's going feel like tonight,'' Williams said. "We'll see.'' New Orleans Times-Picayune

Late in the second quarter of the Hornets’ win over the Bobcats on Friday, Anthony Davis and Byron Mullens got tangled up. There was some pushing and shoving to go along with the requisite showing of bravado, before the referees stepped in and the two had to be separated. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist then came over to intervene, in what you’d hope was an attempt to calm rather than inflame the situation. But the official was already there, so MKG ended up running him over, which sent the ref tumbling to the ground. There’s no guarantee Kidd-Gilchrist will be suspended for the contact; the rule book only specifies an automatic one-game suspension for making “intentional” contact with an official, and in this case, that’s going to be subjective. After sitting out the previous two games with a mild concussion, New Orleans Hornets rookie forward Anthony Davis could be cleared to play for Friday night's game against the Charlotte Bobcats, according to sources close to the situation. Davis said after Thursday's practice that he is no longer experiencing recurring concussion symptoms such as headaches but continues to undergo tests required in the NBA's strict concussion policy. Chad Ford: This isn't the greatest year to have a Top 3 pick in the draft. The consensus Top 3 are Nerlens Noel, Cody Zeller and Shabazz Muhammad. I like all three, but not sure any of them are franchise players the way Anthony Davis was. For the Suns, I would suspect Muhammad might be the most attractive. ESPN.com

Williams made the comments when asked about Hornets forward Anthony Davis, who was injured last Friday night when he was hit in the heat with an elbow from teammate Austin Rivers. "The better he feels in the next couple of days, it helps the situation,'' Williams said before Saturday's game at the United Center. "But when you're dealing with the brain, I guess what's happening in football it's impacted everybody. So he got touched up a little bit last night and I'm sure that happens a lot in basketball. It's just that now you treat everybody like they have on white gloves and pink drawers. It's just getting old, but it's just the way the league is now.'' New Orleans Times-Picayune

New Orleans Hornets coach Monty Williams blasted the NBA's protocols for determining when a player can return from a concussion, a day after No. 1 draft pick Anthony Davis suffered a mild one. Williams unloaded before Saturday's game against the Chicago Bulls, saying, "Now, they treat everybody like they have white gloves and pink drawers and it's getting old. It's just the way the league is now." Associated Press

Asked what he doesn't like about the concussion policy, he said, "I'm not saying I don't like it. We've got to protect the players, but I think the players should have more say-so in how they feel. I'm sure I had four or five concussions when I played, and it didn't bother me. The NBA is doing what's necessary to protect the players, but this is not the NFL. You don't get hit in the head that much. I understand it. But as a coach, I'm a baby about it. I want my guys ready to play." Associated Press

The Hornets announced after the game that Davis will undergo further tests in New Orleans on Saturday. The NBA put in a concussion policy in 2011 that will determine when players return from head injuries. Under the rule, Davis will have to complete a series of tests to determine if he's fit to return. Once Davis is free of symptoms, he will have to make it through increasing stages of exertion, from a stationary bike, to jogging, agility work to non-contact drills while ensuring the concussion-like symptoms don't return after each one, according to the league's concussion policy. The New Orleans Hornets announced Friday that rookie forward Anthony Davis suffered a “mild concussion” during the second quarter of a Friday night game against the Utah Jazz. Davis will not travel with the Hornets to Chicago for a Saturday night game against the Bulls at the United Center and will instead remain in New Orleans to undergo “further tests.” He is currently listed as day-to-day.
