The San Antonio Spurs have expressed interest in signing Mexico star center Gustavo Ayon, ESPN.com has learned. Ayon ranks as one of the top free agents playing at the FIBA World Cup starting Saturday in Spain and, according to league sources, has emerged as a late-summer target for the NBA's reigning champions. Sources say San Antonio remains determined to re-sign Australian center Aron Baynes -- who will square off against Ayon on Wednesday when the Aussies meet Mexico in Group D play -- but has identified Ayon as both a potential Baynes replacement or a possible addition to the roster even if a new deal with Baynes is worked out. With the likes of Boris Diaw, Patty Mills and Matt Bonner having earned new contracts, the lone member of the Spurs’ 2014 championship team yet to re-sign is restricted free agent center Aron Baynes. Well-known Turkish sportscaster Ismael Senol tweeted on Sunday that while Baynes hopes to return to San Antonio, he’s also begun to explore options overseas in the hopes of signing for at least $1.5 million Euros. Baynes, 27, has been a marginal contributor since joining the Spurs in Jan. 2013. He averaged 3.0 points and 2.7 rebounds with a 9.7 Player Efficiency Rating — 15.0 is average — in 53 appearances last season. San Antonio Express-News

The duo they were a guest on an Australian Fox Sports News show, speaking on winning the title, their experience with the Spurs, Mills learning from Tony Parker, Baynes’ future in the NBA, Team Australia’s chances at the 2014 FIBA World Cup and much more. But Mills and Baynes get video bombed by none other than the reporter they first video bombed (and shoved Mills near his surgically-repaired shoulder no less) during their interview.
