The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have recalled forward Austin Daye from the Austin Toros of the NBA Development League. In Saturday night’s contest against the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, Daye recorded 27 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocked shots in 40 total minutes. It marked his first game with the Toros this season since being acquired by the Spurs on Feb. 20. NBA.com

Q: Gregg Popovich said recently that Nando De Colo requested a trade earlier in the season. Were you exploring a trade all season, or did the deal with Toronto (traded Austin Daye to the Spurs for De Colo last month) just pop up last minute? RC Buford: I mean we looked for opportunities to help our team. There were times when Nando was playing a significant role that made it more difficult than other times because of injuries and such, so when opportunities became available that allowed us to help Nando accomplish his goals and give us an opportunity to look at Austin and see if he might be able to fit; I mean, often times things happen closer to the deadline than most, but it doesn’t mean that you were pursing it any harder or any less hard earlier than that. It’s just, people tend dance toward the deadline. San Antonio Express-News

Q: Speaking of Austin Daye, what are your thoughts on him? Does he fit long-term or is it just something right now — an experiment? RC Buford: I don’t know how you know whether he fits long-term. His body of work for us to evaluate is not great, but I think that parts of his game, that he does well, can fit the way we play. We haven’t had a lot of practice time, and he hasn’t had a lot of game time, so it’s almost impossible to say what his role is other then to say: I think he has an opportunity for the future. He’s under contract for next year and we’ll see what happens. (The time between) now and the end of the summer will have a big impact on his ability to create a role. San Antonio Express-News

It’s hard to see Daye becoming a factor this season. But he might show enough for the Spurs to fully guarantee next season over the summer. “I think it’s a great chance for me — I don’t think it’s the last chance for me,” Daye said. “If that’s what they’ve been saying, that’s what they can think. I know I’m a good player in this league, I know I can play in this league.” Detroit Free Press

Scouts will tell you Daye can’t guard me (in fact, that’s precisely how one league guy put it last week) and that he’s a bit scrawny and needs to bulk up somehow to have any chance at doing something significant. But he can stretch defences, one guy told me that Daye could possibly be a three in some odd circumstances and he’s got a bit of promise if he ever bulks up. A couple of other teams – specifically Miami and the Lakers – were sniffing around the former No. 15 draft pick but he picked Toronto. Toronto Star

A few teams have expressed interest in Daye, most recently the Los Angeles Lakers. No signing is imminent at this point, but Daye worked out for Lakers officials on Wednesday. Since his 2012-13 season came to an end, Daye has been working out at Impact Basketball in Las Vegas, where he trains every summer and holds his own against fellow NBA players. It’s clear that Daye has the talent to make it in the league – he just needs to find a team that can help him grow and make the most of his skills. HoopsWorld

Austin Daye has yet to work out for an NBA team, but the free agent forward told RealGM on Friday that he has been in discussions with several organizations. “I haven’t yet but when I do work out, I’ll be shooting the hell out of the ball and be ready for whatever team I can go to,” Daye said. “Whatever situation I’m at, I want to get some minutes and be productive.” RealGM
