HoopsHype Ben Hansbrough rumors
However hard Ben Hansbrough has worked to form himself into an NBA-caliber prospect, he's going to have to work just a little harder still. The Notre Dame guard suffered a badly sprained ankle in a workout Saturday in Indianapolis and will miss this week's crucial pre-NBA Draft Combine in Chicago, his father Gene told the Tribune Monday. Hansbrough is now down in North Carolina doing rehabilitation, but Gene Hansbrough said today was the first day his son could put any weight on the ankle, which is in a protective boot. Hansbrough was using a cane to walk after the injury until today, his father said. Chicago Tribune
Hansbough's decision to decline an invitation to Portsmouth could be detrimental to his draft stock considering the question marks surrounding his uncertain position and physical limitations. It shows a lack of confidence in his abilities, which was one thing he had going for him in terms of likeable qualities as an NBA prospect. As a 6'3 guard who lacks the quickness to guard the 1 and the size/strength to guard a 2, it would have been nice to see what he can do against some of the better college players in a showcase event. Though scouts aren't completely sold on Ben's future as an NBA prospect – if he lights it up in the NCAA Tournament, he might climb into the picture as a possible second-rounder – Tyler has no doubts. "Nowadays, it seems like people are drafting more on pure athleticism and I think the trend is you're seeing more players that can play go out and get the job done," he said. "Ben's athletic and he can do a lot of things, but he can play. He's a pretty good player so we'll see what happens. I hope he gets a shot." NBA.com
