Bayno worked in Los Angeles with Brazilian center Paulao Prestes, a 2011 second-round pick, for two weeks before Las Vegas Summer League play. When asked if he's an NBA player, Bayno said, "I don't know about now. He's certainly tough enough. ... Down the road, he has a chance." Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Bayno will travel to Montenegro for two weeks in August to work with center Nikola Pekovic, who should be cleared by then for full-contact practice after undergoing May surgery to remove bone spurs from his ankle. Newly signed center Greg Stiemsma -- who will be officially introduced Thursday at Target Center -- will either work with Bayno and Pekovic in Montenegro or with Bayno in Los Angeles next month. Wolves assistant coach Bill Bayno, who got to know Roy well when he worked on the Portland bench in two separate stints in the last few years, has been the driving force in Minnesota's interest. He's done enough to convince head coach Rick Adelman that the risk is worth it. The last hurdle, sources say, was to convince president of basketball operations David Kahn. That apparently recently happened. ESPN.com

Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan plans to promote advance scout Larry Greer to assistant coach to replace the departed Bill Bayno, a team source has told The Oregonian. The Blazers are finalizing Greer's contract, but it is 99 percent complete and the source expects the deal to become official within the next few days. Greer has been an NBA scout for six seasons, including the last four with the Blazers. He worked two seasons with the Houston Rockets, under coach Jeff Van Gundy, prior to joining the Blazers. In the end, Bill Bayno’s departure from the Trail Blazers’ coaching staff came down to one thing: Security. The Minnesota Timberwolves and new coach Rick Adelman offered the former Blazers assistant coach a four-year contract — three more years than the Blazers would offer — and a difficult decision became a no-brainer for Bayno. “We talk all the time about this being a business when players get traded or coaches get fired and its no different in this situation,” Bayno said in an e-mail to The Oregonian. “My first choice was to stay and I did everything in my power to do that. But in the end, I had to take this offer. It was too good to pass up.” Oregonian

Joe Freeman: Helping fill Bayno's player development role is Buck Williams. He'll join staff full-time this year after serving part-time role a year ago. Twitter
