HoopsHype Bill Self rumors

As far as fans worrying about him taking an NBA job this offseason, Self said Friday: “There’s nothing about me and the NBA. Zero.” Asked about leaving anytime soon, he told 610 radio: “No, I don’t think so. We’ve got so many good things going on right here. You add the DeBruce Center (for Naismith rules and training table) and add the living quarters (new apartment complex to be built) to go along with the way we’ll be fed, from a recruiting standpoint we’ve done pretty well. I think we can even take a step up.” Lawrence Journal-World

Kansas freshman center Joel Embiid will not play in the opening weekend of the NCAA tournament, coach Bill Self confirmed to the Kansas City Star on Wednesday. While Self previously told ESPN.com that he was confident Embiid would play at some point in the tourney, the 7-foot Cameroon native wasn't expected to be available for the opening weekend due to an ailing back. Embiid also missed the final two regular-season games and the Big 12 tournament. "He's not going to play," Self told Kansascity.com "I'm not saying there couldn't be a miraculous act occur, but we're certainly not planning on that or expecting that." ESPN.com

Kansas head coach Bill Self is remaining positive that freshman center Joel Embiid will return during the postseason after going to see a back specialist for the second time on Monday. "I'm optimistic he'll play soon," Self said during a phone interview on Monday. "He'll be back. I'm 100-percent optimistic he'll be back. We just don't know yet whether it will be this week or next week. We're not going to put him out there until the doctors say he's ready." 630WPRO.com

Self told Davis he has never received an NBA job offer, and has only had a few people talk to him "generically" about such a scenario. Self added he was happy for Stevens, and he expects Boston's first-year coach to eventually experience success with the Celtics, which should help other college coaches land NBA jobs in the future. But Self said the NBA isn't something that interests him right now: "I'm not looking at all. I really believe I've got one of the better coaching jobs in America — pro or college — right here in Lawrence, Kansas. So it would take something really special, and my mindset would have to change, but right now, I'm really enjoying trying to get college kids better. That to me is somethings we take great pride in and something that we all enjoy doing." Lawrence Journal-World

Trying to guard Wiggins from overexposure, Kansas coach Bill Self recently said the school would limit media access to Wiggins, so that he doesn't wear out before the season begins. "He can't go anywhere without getting bombarded," Self said last week. "I've never felt for players in regards to things like that, but I do feel for him, because he hasn't asked for one bit of it." Bill Self said never say never. One of seven people inducted in the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame on Monday night at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, the Kansas University men's basketball coach was asked if he would ever consider coaching in the NBA. “It hasn't really tempted me because I haven't had that many people talk to me about it,” Self said. “But at some point and time, sure, I think it would (tempt me). It would be great to be able to match wits with the best athletes in the world, but I'm certainly happy where I'm at. “I'm not saying I never would (coach in the NBA) but I'm locked in.” Oklahoman

Since Self wouldn't owe Kansas a penalty if he leaves before his contract expires in 2022, would the ultimate job for the Edmond Memorial product be to coach the NBA team in the shadows of his hometown? “I wouldn't say the Thunder,” Self said. “They've done a remarkable job. They have a coach (Scott Brooks) who is one of the bright stars in all of basketball, at any level. That's not anything I would think about.” Oklahoman

Had lunch with Bill Self for a story that'll post tomorrow. But he did say, yes, someday the NBA may interest him. "Maybe eventually," Self said when I asked him going to the NBA. "But not now. I really think I have a better job than a majority of the NBA guys." Sulia
