HoopsHype Blake Griffin + Trade rumors

June 26, 2014 Updates

Obviously, Riley's ultimate desire is to keep James, but I'm told that if he must lose him, his preference would be to sign-and-trade him to the Clippers for Blake Griffin. If James decides he's leaving, that would indeed be the next best thing for Miami. And while the Clippers aren't at the top of his list, they can't be ruled out completely. ESPN.com

One player they have no interest in moving, however, is forward Blake Griffin. While the Clippers would need to move significant players and money to make a run at either James or Anthony, sources told ESPN that Clippers president and coach Doc Rivers has told Griffin on numerous occasions that he considers him "untouchable" in any trade. The Los Angeles Clippers have strong interest in pursuing LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony if they can clear the requisite salary cap space to make a maximum-level offer to the superstars, who have both elected to become free agents starting July 1. One player they have no interest in moving, however, is forward Blake Griffin. A general manager who has one of those three players [LaMarcus Aldridge, Kevin Love, David West] said he has not been contacted by the Clippers about dealing for his power forward, nor has he heard that the Clippers have expressed an interest in moving Griffin. Nor does the GM expect they will, for one particular reason: the owner. "Sterling is not going to do anything with Blake because he’s terrified they're going to say, 'See, you screwed it up again,'" the GM said. "Donald understands dunks and star power, not spacing the floor.” Bleacher Report

One source close to the situation said the Clippers' latest internal discussion ended in favor of keeping Griffin. New York's top priority, meanwhile, appears to be re-signing Anthony to a long-term deal this offseason. But with the Knicks struggling badly and Anthony refusing to give assurances that he will return, the Knicks understand they must at least consider other options. ESPN.com

The overall cloudy Knicks picture suggests that Anthony might force his hand to make the one and only trade that's best for him this season and beyond: going to the Clippers. In that scenario, a compelling blockbuster deal that fits money-wise would be Anthony and shooting guard Iman Shumpert for Griffin, small forward Jared Dudley and center Ryan Hollins. A deal-breaker could be a future first-round pick to the Knicks. Bleacher Report
