How great is it that Michigan and Indiana are both really good again at the same time for the first time in two decades? Thoughts on this rekindled, classic Big Ten rivalry, Bob? "I'm not sure what the Fab Five was," Knight said Thursday during an ESPN broadcast of an Alabama-Arkansas game. "They never won anything. "They never won a championship, they didn't get anywhere, they got beat." CBSSports.com Shortly after ESPN showed a promotion for Saturday's matchup between No. 1 Michigan and No. 3 Indiana in Bloomington's Assembly Hall, play-by-play man Rece Davis began to offer a historical perspective on how long it'd been since Michigan had reached the No. 1 spot in a national poll. And, naturally, the Fab Five's 1992-93 team -- which began the year as the preseason No. 1 -- came up. Knight, as is often the case these days, was not impressed. "Fab indicates, to me, that you've won something," Knight said. "I've never been able to understand what 'Fab' was," he added. "It wasn't championships, I always knew that." CBSSports.com |

The fact that Barkley and two other Dream Teamers, Karl Malone and John Stockton, had been cut from the Bob Knight-coached 1984 Olympic team came up several times during the weekend. C.M. Newton, an assistant to Knight on that team and later one of the USA Basketball Committee members who picked the Dream Team, mentioned it on Thursday night. "Charles could've been on that team, but he wanted to go back to Leeds and eat fried chicken or whatever they do back there," said Newton. He probably regretted it the moment he said it, but no one took it as racist, which it wasn't. (Barkley has talked about eating fried chicken himself.) Barkley didn't miss a beat. "What you really wanted to say, C.M., was that Bobby Knight was a prick," said Charles. The room roared but it will probably be edited out of the official Hall of Fame video. SI.com |

Coach (Bob) Knight has a lot of respect for me, but he gets his shots in. I attended a home game when he was still there (Indiana) and I had just purchased these nice looking cowboy boots. They were all shined up with a point on the toes. I thought I was sharp. I went in there with those cowboy boots on and Coach Knight looked down at me and then looked at my boots, and then back at me. He said, ‘Boy, I wish I had those boots when you were playing….because I sure would have kicked your ass'. I wasn’t expecting that, but Coach Knight saying that is funny to me. I usually had comebacks for him, but I didn’t have a comeback for that one. He is someone you’ll never forget in your life. I might have a picture around here somewhere of Isiah (Thomas) trailing me on a dunk. If I find it, I'll send it to you. Beyond The Beat |
