And so Batum went for 35 and 27 points in the final two games of the World Cup to give France the bronze medal, and he noticed his Portland teammates urging him in training camp: Shoot, Nic. Shoot. “I try to do everything on the court, but I know I got to be more aggressive,” Batum told RealGM. “The team needs it. Everybody’s pushing me here. When Tony Parker didn’t play with us this summer, Boris Diaw and I had to step up our games. That was a cool learning experience for me. Here, we’re all young and I would like to be the guy for LaMarcus and Damian. I would like that a lot. But I know I need to be aggressive, and it is coming.” RealGM

He faces stiff competition from 15 other candidates, including Philadelphia rookie Joel Embiid, who leads Ginobili in first place by about 2,000 votes, and two of his own teammates, Boris Diaw and Patty Mills. “I’m enabling them to do well, carrying them,” Ginobili joked of his teammates at Tuesday’s shootaround. “I’m the defending champion, so I may have relaxed a little bit.” San Antonio Express-News

“I’m going to try my hardest (to win),” said Diaw, who is currently fifth in the voting. “I’ve been practicing a lot, probably more than basketball. Me and Patty, we’re going to team up and put our counts together and try to hype this up.” San Antonio Express-News

Manu Ginobili, Boris Diaw and Patty Mills are among 16 nominees up for Hoops Hype’s 2014 Tweeter of the Year. Ginobili currently sits in second, about 2,000 votes behind Philadelphia rookie Joel Embiid. Diaw and Mills are in fifth and sixth, respectively. All three are obviously active on the popular social media site, particularly Ginobili. He won the award last year, posting everything from math riddles for local high school students to win Spurs tickets to candid pictures of his young sons. San Antonio Express-News

Coach Gregg Popovich had joked at media day about starting a betting pool on how much Diaw would weigh upon rejoining the Spurs prior to their recent exhibition games in Berlin and Istanbul. That prompted Diaw to share the aforementioned photo, earning minor buzz on social media. “He commented on what I was doing in France while they were practicing here,” Diaw said. “I was just chilling. It wasn’t far from the truth. … I was expecting it, because they were coming back to work and I was still on vacation.” San Antonio Express-News

Diaw reintegrated himself smoothly, however. The Frenchman averaged 6.5 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists in the two games, providing the same Swiss-army-knife versatility that was such a crucial asset during the Spurs’ championship run. Best of all, any concerns about Diaw ballooning over the offseason proved to be unfounded. “Boris looked fine and he’s ready to go,” Popovich said. “He’s always played with a little more weight, and he knows how to use it. He’s fine.” San Antonio Express-News

If there is indeed a pool, the biggest winner of all will be Diaw himself, who stands to pocket half a million dollars ($) if he can keep himself at or below 254 at three different points during the upcoming season, according to ESPN Insider Amin Elhassan: Oct. 25, the first Tuesday after the All-Star break and again on April 1. As Insider is a pay site, we’ll refrain from listing the exact payouts for each date. But it adds up to a cool $500,000, a not insignificant bonus to the $7.5 million that Diaw, officially listed at 250, is slated to make in the first season of the multi-year extension he signed this summer after serving as a key cog in the Spurs’ championship run.
