HoopsHype Bruce Levenson rumors

April 13, 2014 Updates

Steve Koonin, currently the president of Turner Entertainment Networks, will soon be named Chief Executive Officer of the Atlanta Hawks, according to several people familiar with the decision. An announcement could come as soon as this week. The Hawks had no comment on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution rerport Sunday. Bob Williams, who serves as President of the Hawks and Philips Arena, will remain with the organization operating the arena. Danny Ferry remains President of Basketball Operations and General Manager. Atlanta Journal-Constitution

NBA owners have approved Steve Koonin as a part-owner of the Atlanta Hawks and he will become the team's new CEO, sources told ESPN.com. Bruce Levenson, who has presided over a sometimes fractured ownership group since 2004, will remain the Hawks' controlling owner while taking on Koonin as an Atlanta-based partner. Fights over control of the team resulted in a protracted legal battle and the sale of the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers, which relocated to Winnipeg in 2011. ESPN.com

Here is the story Tim Tucker and I did on the Hawks current ownership situation that appeared in Sunday’s print edition of the AJC. I think you will find some details that haven’t previously been reported. One year later, the Hawks’ ownership group considers itself fortunate that its deal to sell a majority stake in the team to a Los Angeles businessman fell through. “Extremely” fortunate, Bruce Levenson said. “Extremely.” Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Among the questions Ferry asked before accepting the job, according to Levenson: “One, were we committed to building a championship organization here? And two, did we have our act together in terms of how we manage this business from an ownership perspective? “There is no way Danny Ferry comes here,” Levenson said, “if, through his due diligence, he didn’t determine that was the case.” Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Hawks co-owner Bruce Levenson said Monday that Ferry has the right character and experience to take over a team which lost to Boston in the first round of this year's playoffs after making it to the second round three straight years. "Over the past nine years Danny Ferry has earned tremendous respect as a front office executive in the NBA," Levenson said. SI.com
