HoopsHype Chase Budinger rumors

June 30, 2013 Updates

Despite missing most of the season with surgery to repair torn cartilage in his knee, Minnesota Timberwolves free- agent forward Chase Budinger is emerging as a significant target for several teams, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. The Timberwolves, Milwaukee Bucks and New Orleans Pelicans have made his signing a priority, and several teams have secondary interest, including Utah, Indiana and Memphis, front-office sources told Y! Sports. Yahoo! Sports

The T'wolves and Pelicans need his shooting, and plan to be aggressive suitors for Budinger, league sources said. Milwaukee has wavered on re-signing guard J.J. Redick, sources said, and Budinger could be a less-expensive, but efficient, alternative. Yahoo! Sports

Saunders told a group of reporters Friday that he'll be out of town this weekend, presumably visiting a free agent. Who? Not sure as of publication. But what is known is that Saunders has strong interest in shooting guard O.J. Mayo. One possibility for Saunders' trip: meet with Mayo in Southern California. Oh by the way, unrestricted free agent Chase Budinger is in that area too. 1500 ESPN

Budinger played 17½ minutes backing up starter Andrei Kirilenko at small forward. “A lot better than what I expected,” Budinger said afterward. “I was still a little nervous attacking the basket and I got tired legs there, especially in the second half. But all in all, the knee felt good out there. I felt my wind was pretty good, more my legs just getting tired out there. You saw that with me shooting an airball.” Minneapolis Star-Tribune

Chase Budinger continues to work out hard with coaches and said it's possible he could make his return Thursday at Sacramento, IF he comes through his first 5-on-5 practice Wednesday feeling good. "It all depends on how I practice," he said before tonight's game, adding he's moving better and his conditioning is coming along but that there's no substitute for playing in games. Wolves forward Chase Budinger was cleared for full-contact workouts in a phone call with Florida surgeon Dr. James Andrews Tuesday. That means his return is near, but a date has not yet been set. Andrews performed surgery to repair a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee Nov. 13. “We had a call with (Andrews),” Budinger said. “We told him what I’ve been doing lately, telling him I’ve been progressing well. He was pleased with that and said I could go into the next phase of doing contact stuff.” Minneapolis Star-Tribune
