This has been a summer of great change for the organization. Is the roster finally set, or are you still looking to make some moves? Chris Grant: We feel good about this group heading into camp. Of course, we’ll continue to approach this from an opportunistic perspective throughout the season as we always do. If there is a move that we feel makes sense and puts us in a more desirable position, we’ll certainly look at that. We have flexibility and we’ll continue to value that. HoopsHype

Grant calls the trade exception a “powerful tool.” They hope to be able to pounce on a very good player when he becomes available, possibly near the trade deadline. “It creates more opportunity,” Grant said. “It’s like having $14.5 million in cap space, except you can’t actually go sign a player with it. You can only sign a player into it. It helps you facilitate trades. If a team is in the luxury tax and they want to get out of it, they might give you an asset to do a deal. Maybe you can’t quite make a deal work because the numbers don’t work, you can use that to put players into a trade. It’s a pretty powerful tool. We’ll be aggressive with it as we go into the season. “We want to be flexible, strategic and not be emotional,” he said. News-Herald

Gilbert said it was almost a no-brainer having Grant replace Ferry. “We thought he was ready for the challenge,” Gilbert said. “We didn’t have to go on some massive search. The candidate pool wasn’t that deep any way. We got the best guy. “Chris and Danny worked like a partnership. Danny was the front guy from a PR standpoint. We realized how strong Chris was over the years with his depth of experience and his overall skill level. I’ve always been impressed. In reality, he had more experience than Danny or Lance. He’s been doing it for almost 15 years.” Morning Journal

Scott, 49, said he loves working with Grant. “I love Chris to death,” he said. “I saw something in Chris in summer league that I really, really liked. He’s a very good communicator with players. He has a great work ethic. He’s not a yes man. When he has an opinion, he lets me know about it. I want that from all my assistant coaches (too). “I don’t have an ego where I think everything I do is the right way. I’m willing to learn and listen. The final decision is always mine.” Grant said people shouldn’t sell the Cavs short. “We have a good coaching staff,” he said. “We have youth on our team. Who knows what it’s going to turn into?” Morning Journal

The Cavaliers are playing a waiting game with restricted free agent forward Jawad Williams. They made a $1.03 million qualifying offer to the 6-foot-9, 218-pounder at the end of June. Unless Williams gets a better offer from another team, he'll likely accept the qualifying offer. Cavs general manager Chris Grant is hoping to add Williams to the roster. He could become the starting small forward. If nothing else, Williams will compete for playing time with Jamario Moon and newcomer Joey Graham. "We like Jawad," Grant said. "We'll get into training camp and see what happens. We have a qualifying offer out to him. I haven't heard one way or the other. Obviously, we'd like him to come to camp and compete and make his mark on being part of the team." News-Herald

Grant declined to comment on reports that he recently signed a two-year extension with a raise. "I don't want to get into any details about that," he said. "I will say Dan's been great. Ownership has been great. I think this organization is in a good place. Dan and his group remain supportive and I don't see that changing." Cleveland Plain Dealer

The Cavaliers have promoted Wes Wilcox to director of pro player personnel and Trent Redden to basketball operations manager/scout, Cavs general manager Chris Grant announced today. Wilcox joined the Cavaliers prior to the 2003-04 season and for the past three seasons has served as the team's pro/college scout. He has played a key role in the Cavs personnel operation, focusing on the NBA and NCAA as well as the minor and international leagues. He also served as an advance scout. Cleveland Plain Dealer

Cavs General Manager Chris Grant is still searching for other free agents, but he is adamant about keeping the roster flexible and not getting tied into bad contracts. The Cavs still have a $14.5 million trade exception from the LeBron James deal with the Miami Heat, but aren't expected to use that anytime soon. They were in the hunt for veteran Matt Barnes, but Barnes ultimately accepted less money to play with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Cavs were unwilling to go beyond two guaranteed years for Barnes. Clearly, Grant hasn't had time to address how the Cavs will continue their relationship with Erie. That's OK. He plans to make sure the two sides maintain the strong connection they've had since Cleveland became an NBA affiliate of the BayHawks in 2008. "The relationship will remain the same," Grant said during a telephone interview. "We have a strong belief in the BayHawks and the system that's in place with the (D-League). "We're proud to be associated with the Erie BayHawks," he said, "We look forward to continuing the relationship, continuing to grow and expand and support the Erie BayHawks as much as we can." NBA teams can send down their first- or second-year players. Two Cavs fall into that category: forwards Danny Green and Christian Eyenga. A 2009 first-round pick of the Cavaliers, Eyenga signed with them this past week. He averaged 11.4 points in five NBA Summer League games in Las Vegas this month. Green, a 2009 second-round pick, finished his rookie year with Cleveland this past season. "We don't know what's going to happen," Grant said. "We can't predict injuries or what may happen in the future, but the fact that the teams are so close together certainly helps and it sets up a standard for a relationship that can work both ways." The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed guard/forward Christian Eyenga to a contract, Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant announced today. The deal is a for two years and about $2 million guaranteed, with team options in years three and four. Because he was a first-round draft pick in 2009, that money does not come out of the Cavaliers' mid-level exception, which still leaves them a $5.7 million slot to spend in free agency. The Cavs met with James first and did so for around 90 minutes. According to sources, the team wanted to keep the meeting rather short and focus on the team's familiarity with him and his comfort level with the franchise. New coach Byron Scott, general manager Chris Grant, assistant general manager Lance Blanks and owner Dan Gilbert were the principals in the meeting. In addition to presentations from Scott and Grant about their plans, sources said the Cavs showed James a cartoon featuring him and his friends as characters. Cleveland Plain Dealer

Cavs new GM Chris Grant came out a side door to address the media after two-hour meeting with LeBron. The glass door was locked at first, which set up a comical scene of Grant jokingly waving his hands and saying he can't hear anyone's questions. The door was finally unlocked and he emerged with a statement: “We had a very good meeting with LeBron and his group Newsday
