Covington was eligible for the 2013 NBA Draft following a standout four-year career at Tennessee State. He earned Second Team All-Ohio Valley Conference honors as a senior and a sophomore and First Team distinction as a junior. In a related move, the Sixers waived Chris Johnson. NBA.com

Chris Johnson was the 76er, who received the pink slip to make room for Robert Covington. The team will sign Covington, a 6-foot-9, 215-pound forward on Saturday. He could join the team as early as that day and will be available to play for the Sixers (0-9) on Monday at the San Antonio Spurs. They had to waive Johnson to make room on the 15-man roster. According to a league source, the Sixers have also been in contact with former Syracuse powe forward Arinze Onuaku. However, the source added that he didn't know how serious those discussions were. The 6-9, 275-pounder played a total of five games last season with the New Orleans Pelicans and Cleveland Cavaliers. Covington was called up from the Grand Rapids Drive of the NBA Development League team. Philadelphia Inquirer

The Celtics have invited former Penn State guard Tim Frazier, Kansas State swingman Rodney McGruder, and Indiana forward Christian Watford to training camp, according to reports. With Colton Iverson signing with a team in Spain and Mike Moser likely headed to another training camp, the Celtics will enter camp with 21 players. Chris Babb and Chris Johnson are under nonguaranteed contracts and the club has yet to announce the Evan Turner deal, making their 15-man roster rather uncertain. Center Vitor Faverani remains under contract as well as Joel Anthony, who accepted his $3.8 million option for next season. Training camp is likely to remain at the team’s Waltham practice facility and not at Salve Regina in Newport R.I. Boston Globe

Which brings us to Chris Johnson, one of few Celtics working with a non-guaranteed contract. Johnson's contract status certainly has him on the outside looking-in, there are plenty of reasons the 6-foot-6 swingman's camp is "cautiously optimistic" about his chances of sticking with the Green team. "So far, everything has been positive," his agent Marc Cornstein, told CSNNE.com in a phone interview on Tuesday. "We're well aware of the roster additions. He has a great relationship with the Celtics organization and the coaching staff and as I said, everything we have heard thus far as been positive so we're cautiously optimistic about his future with the Celtics." An NBA source said the Celtics are working to clear roster space over the next few weeks in order to make room for Evan Turner in the rotation. The Celtics aren’t expected to announce the signing until those moves are made, although the sides have reached an agreement. The Celtics have 18 players on their roster, including the nonguaranteed deals of Keith Bogans, Chris Babb, and Chris Johnson. The Celtics really like Johnson’s work ethic, but he averaged just 6.6 points in the five summer league games and shot 30.6 percent from the field and 18.8 percent from the 3-point line. The fact Johnson and Babb each played in all five games was a testament that team officials were taking a long look as to whether they would make a contribution next season. Boston Globe

The Celtics would love to use Bogans’s contract in a trade that would perhaps net a draft pick and create salary-cap space and have been holding onto that option. It is uncertain if the Celtics would waive Bogans before the season or offer a camp invitation since he has been away from the team since February. Boston Globe
