Former Knicks guard Chris Smith hopes to return to the team next year after undergoing knee surgery this season. “They told me to wait until summer league and then go from there,” Smith, the New Jersey native and former Louisville standout, told SNY.tv exclusively following practice Sunday. “I’m pretty confident that I’ll make the team next year.” ZagsBlog.com

It would seem unlikely the Knicks would keep the 15th roster spot open for rookie combo guard Chris Smith now that he’s undergoing patella tendon surgery on his left knee, but J.R.’s brother does have a future with the franchise. Coach Mike Woodson didn’t entirely rule out Smith not being waived. Smith will be out three to six months and will rehab at the Knicks training facility. When he returns, Smith, who had a partially guaranteed contract, can join the Knicks-operated D-League team in Erie, Pa., even if he is waived so the Knicks can monitor him. New York Post

J.R. Smith was looking forward to playing next to his brother, whether in preseason games or in the regular season. Smith said it was difficult to see his brother get hurt. “Any time you see anybody hurt it hurts you, but when you see your brother hurt — and he lives in the same house as you and is trying to achieve the same goals as you — it really puts a damper on the mood,” he said. “To have this injury going into training camp when you’re trying to make a team and prove yourself, it’s frustrating. My job as a teammate is to keep pushing him and make sure he gets back to 100 percent.” New York Times

Shortly after the Knicks’ practice Wednesday, J.R. Smith asked for fans on Twitter to encourage his brother. “Please Pray for my Lil Bro @Cswish9 as he goes in for surgery tomorrow!” Smith wrote. New York Times

Chris Smith, the younger brother of guard J.R. Smith, will join the Knicks, according to a source familiar with the situation. Terms of the contract have not been confirmed. On Wednesday, J.R. tweeted a photo of Chris signing, but the deal won't be official until the Knicks sign a contract and the NBA does its paperwork, typical for a new acquisition. ESPN.com
