Chris Wilcox calls Jeff Green his mentor. Green calls Wilcox his “scar buddy.” Considering that both are healthy enough, following their respective heart surgeries last winter, to start practicing today with the Celtics, this support network is already off to a strong start. “I’ll definitely feel a bond with Jeff Green for the rest of my life,” said Wilcox. “When he first came into the league (with Seattle) he was my rook. We had a bond right there. But he’s been my mentor going through this thing, me asking him what’s next, and what to expect. He’s been great with what to expect. “We definitely help each other out,” said the Celtics big man. “We’ll be working out, and I’ll ask him have you ever felt this before, and he’ll say yeah, all the time. If I have any problems pertaining to the surgery, he’s the guy I go to. I’ll ask him what’s next. He’s been with me through it all, and it’s a blessing that someone has been through the same thing as me. I know what to expect. I saw him here during Game 6 (against Miami) and he told me he was good, and I was like, Oh man, I have to get there. When I went home I was burning, just trying to walk. It was motivation and my adrenalin was up.” Boston Herald

The Boston Celtics formally re-signed Kevin Garnett, Brandon Bass, and Chris Wilcox on Saturday, while deals with Jeff Green and Jason Terry will soon be completed. Bass, Wilcox, Green, and Terry all trekked to the Celtics' practice facility Saturday to be introduced alongside Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge and team owner Steve Pagliuca. The team has intentionally not finalized deals with Green and Terry in order to allow Ainge flexibility to further maneuver this offseason, though handshake agreements are in place and those players will be in a Boston uniform next season. The Boston Celtics announced today that they have signed free agent forward/center Chris Wilcox. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. “It was very difficult when we lost Chris last season due to his heart ailment,” said Danny Ainge, Celtics President of Basketball Operations. “In bringing Chris back to the team, we are gaining a very versatile guy who is capable of banging down low in the paint and is able to run out on the break as well.” NBA.com

Wilcox had surgery and is beginning basketball activities. Expected to serve as a backup at forward and center, Wilcox agreed to a deal believed to be at the league’s minimum. “I am just excited and ready to get out there on the court,” he said. “I’m ready, just training now and trying to get my body back right, where I can help. Hopefully I can pick up where I left off.” Boston Globe

“The doctors say I’m cleared for everything,” Wilcox said. “I’m working out, running, playing 5-on-5. I’m doing everything. I just can’t do any heavy lifting just yet.” Wilcox lost approximately 20 pounds following surgery, but said he has gained most of that back. “I’m just trying to get healthy right now,” he said. “Right now I’m just trying to get my wind back.” Boston Herald

Free-agent forward Chris Wilcox has been cleared for full-court contact, his agent said Monday, as the 29-year-old attempts to resume his career after undergoing aortic surgery last March. Wilcox had been playing well for the Boston Celtics as a reserve when the team’s doctors noticed what the team called a “significant” enlargement of his aorta. As a precaution, Wilcox was shut down for the season and operated on at the Cleveland Clinic March 29. Doctors performed what is known as a “Modified David” procedure, in which a graft was attached to a small piece of Wilcox’s aorta to prevent it from enlarging further after he finishes playing. There was no valve replacement or bypass procedure performed. NBA.com

The Celtics waived Wilcox in March, clearing a roster space to add big man Ryan Hollins. Even though he is no longer officially on the team, Wilcox flew from his home in North Carolina to attend the Celtics regular season finale against the Milwaukee Bucks. He plans to join the team during the playoffs in Atlanta against the Hawks, and hopes to be with them again next season. “I want to finish what I’ve started here,” he said. “I thought this was a great opportunity for me and things were working out well, and I went to the doctor to get a check up and things just changed.” CSNNE.com

The news was not what Chris Wilcox was looking to hear. The 6-foot-10 big man for the Boston Celtics, who has played some of his best basketball for the Celtics in recent weeks, told CSNNE.com that he will not return to action this season. Wilcox had a series of routine tests conducted that were related to his heart. The findings raised a red flag, and additional tests had to be performed. "The doctors said I'm done for this year," Wilcox said. CSNNE.com
