According to an SI.com source, Person is also expected to receive consideration for the Golden State vacancy. Q: As a team, the Lakers have been incredibly effective keeping other teams off the free throw line, to the point you might actually set a record. Is this a philosophical thing? SHAW: We teach defend without fouling, but it makes it easier when you have big guys inside like Pau [Gasol], Andrew [Bynum], and Lamar [Odom] that we can constantly sandwich the offensive players. We’re chasing them over screens, they’re coming to close up the space, so they’re having to shoot over. Our big guys do a pretty good job of gauging blocking shots as opposed to just taking up space. And then fouling at the right times. Using our fouls when we’re not in the bonus. If they have an advantage on the break, fouling, so that they don’t get an easy basket, but they have to take the ball out [to the sidelines]. ESPN.com

Q: At the risk of asking a question with an obvious answer, I’ll ask anyway: What does it do for the bottom line when you can keep teams off the line? PERSON: The hidden points are at the free throw lines. Teams try to get there, try to get into the bonus early, so teams can’t be as aggressive defensively. Therefore, it’s one of those push-and-pull things. A team is trying to push you into getting fouls, and we resist because we show our hands a lot. We play with our hands out, but still keep bodies on their bodies. That’s one of our theories that we use. The terminology we use. Keep bodies on bodies, but show your hands. ESPN.com

Person was elevated to a full assistant’s role this year in L.A., which could pay off for him when teams start hiring head coaches in the summer. A source tells Sporting News that Person is expected to be a candidate for head coaching jobs next year, particularly the one in Indiana, where Person played six seasons. He also served as an assistant coach for the Pacers under Rick Carlisle, and was interviewed as a candidate when Indiana fired Carlisle. The team eventually brought in Jim O’Brien. Sporting News

Bryant knows he can never get back the gravity-defying prowess he once had, an athleticism James flashes seemingly without effort. He will have to match James in some other way, with some other skill, on Saturday (and no doubt down the line again soon). He will pit his champion's experience and will against the challenger's power and hunger. "I think it's always the push and pull, the oil and vinegar, so to speak when you're talking about skill versus athleticism," Person said. "I think that's what you have when you have a young guy versus a guy that's been in the league 10, 12, 15 years." ESPN.com

The Lakers made it official on Monday, adding Chuck Person to the coaching staff for next season. It was hardly a surprise, having been previously reported, and represented a logical step considering Person's big contribution during the season and the playoffs as a special assistant. He also was their Summer League coach in Las Vegas. Los Angeles Times

Lakers special assistant Chuck Person decided to stay with the team and was promoted to a full-time assistant coach for next season. There was some interest from Portland's Nate McMillan to have Person join his staff, but that hire could not be made until the Trail Blazers replaced Kevin Pritchard with a new GM. According to a source close to the situation, Person did not want to wait out Portland's hiring process and leave a secure offer from the Lakers on the table. ESPN.com

Former Auburn and NBA star Chuck Person finally has a championship ring, as an assistant for the Los Angeles Lakers. But he tells The Birmingham News he would trade it for something else - the head coaching job at his alma mater. Person was a finalist for the job at Auburn that went to Tony Barbee earlier this year. He says it's the job that means most to him, more than a head coaching job in the NBA. WMCTV.com
