HoopsHype Cody Zeller rumors

In a recent commercial to encourage Bobcats fans to donate packs of socks to needy families, Cody Zeller and Josh McRoberts put on a wonderful mini-skit using some sock puppets. The video, while pretty amusing, is definitely for a good cause and comes with an incentive: Fans who donate to the sock drive get a free ticket to the Bobcats game against the Raptors on January 20. “I feel fortunate for how I was brought up and people don’t realize socks are so important especially as the weather is getting colder here,” Zeller said in a video posted on the Bobcats’ website. At the time, Charlotte’s two-year, $5.5 million signing of Josh McRoberts seemed one of the blander contracts of the summer — a fair deal for a fair player. Yet through 20 games, McRoberts has proven to be a very necessary piece for the Bobcats and a deserving starter ahead of Cody Zeller. SI.com

At times, McRoberts’ presence alone has served as the difference between Charlotte’s offense being merely and downright terrible. The primary reason? The bit of dynamism McRoberts provides relative to more limited bigs on the roster, whether through his bits of shooting, his work off the ball, or his committed passing on a team with few quality playmakers. For all his limitations, McRoberts ranks second on the team in three-point makes and first in assists per minute. Those rankings in themselves are indications that something is very wrong with the Bobcats’ construction, but also serve as worthwhile indicators of how useful McRoberts has been to this particular team. Cody Zeller: "I've probably seen Michael Jordan 3-4 times since being drafted. He was at our training camp all week before the season. It's funny because when he's around us he acts like one of the players. He's talking about the game and whatever. It was fun at camp because he was staying in our hotel with us. It was crazy to watch all the stuff you have to do because you're Michael Jordan. He can't go to a restaurant and eat. He has to have someone go pick it up and bring it back to the hotel. He was locked in his room a lot of the time and couldn't go to dinner with the rest of us." SI.com

Orlando Magic guard Victor Oladipo, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2013 draft, dominated the rookie categories. 80% of GMs picked him to win Rookie of the Year, while 40% said he will be the best player of this draft class in five years. Charlotte Bobcats center Cody Zeller, Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anthony Bennett, Sacramento Kings guard Ben McLemore and Boston Celtics center Kelly Olynyk also finished in the top five in the latter question. Higgins said signing Jefferson and drafting Zeller doesn’t mean the Bobcats have lost enthusiasm for developing Biyombo. “Biz fits in well with us. He’ll get opportunities to grow,” Higgins said. “Biz still has a tremendous upside.” Charlotte Observer

Steve Clifford: "Cody Zeller has a lot of physical ability, his basketball IQ is through the roof, he has great intangibles and he’s young. I don’t want to limit him in any way but I want him to progress at his own rate. I don’t want to put demands on him, because he’s so team-oriented he’d feel undue pressure. I’m going to watch him, let him be comfortable and see how he goes. For us to be good, he’s got to be a really big part of it. But he’s a young guy and I don’t think he needs undue demands." The little bit of basketball Zeller has played so far as a Bobcat went exceedingly well. He was named to the all-tournament team at Las Vegas Summer League, after averaging 16.3 points and 9.3 rebounds in four games. New Bobcats coach Steve Clifford gave Zeller plenty of freedom to experiment offensively away from the basket. Zeller was pleasantly surprised how much NBA rules (defensive three-seconds and no-handchecking dribblers) opened up the lane for his drives. “First time in a while it didn’t seem like there were six or seven guys waiting for me in the lane,” Zeller said.
