HoopsHype Dan Nwaelele rumors
The Spurs have released the last of their training camp invites, waiving swingman Courtney Fells and guard Dan Nwaelele on Sunday. The Spurs are down to the 14 contract players with which they are expected to enter the regular season, which begins against Memphis on Oct. 30. They had entered training camp with six free agents, including veteran forwards Corey Maggette and Sam Young. San Antonio Express-News
The Spurs’ roster stands at 16, and by rule will have to be trimmed by at least one before the start of the season. Popovich said he did not anticipate making more cuts until the team returns from Miami, which should come as a relief to forwards Dan Nwaelele and Courtney Fells, the two remaining rookies on camp contracts. As Brent Briggeman illustrated for the Colorado Springs Gazette, the 2007 Air Force Academy graduate wasn’t leading combat patrols. Rather, he spent his time as something of a bean counter, orchestrating the purchase and audit of goods purchased locally to supplement his unit’s supplies. But it still came in the middle of a combat zone. “You’ve got to think about surviving,” he said, “obviously just being alert all the time.” Nwaele, who completed the rest of his five-year service commitment in Saudia Arabia, went into more details about his time in Afghanistan in a profile by the Santa Cruz Patch, recollecting attacks on his post. “There’s nothing like a mortar flying over your head,” he said, “and there’s nothing like feeling the blast wave of that mortar landing a couple hundred yards away. I’ve never felt anything like that in my life.” San Antonio Express-News
