HoopsHype Daniel Gibson rumors

April 2, 2014 Updates

Do you think it will be a challenge getting back to the league? Daniel Gibson: I definitely have to prove myself over again. These teams want to know why. Teams were contacting me at the deadline to see if I wanted to comeback for a 10-day contract. I was really hiding out. Nobody really knew what was going on with me. So I know I got to come back and prove myself. I know it will be difficult, but with the mind frame that I’m in, I know I can accomplish whatever it is I want to do. BallerMindframe.com

Former Cavs guard Daniel Gibson took in the weekend's events and said rumors of his retirement have been greatly exaggerated. "People just wonder what I'm doing,'' he said, flashing his trademark smile. So, what is he doing? "I haven't worked out for any teams,'' he said. "I just want to be 100 percent before I do any of that. I play a lot, but I'm not there yet. When I get there, I'll play. I'm working on myself, so when I do come back and play basketball, it's at a level I'm comfortable with. I'm not trying to just play. I want to play at a high level. That's what I miss. "I'm just taking my time with it. Last month, with all the guys who got hurt, I got flooded with calls to come in for 10 days. I just want to be in control of the situation.'' Cleveland Plain Dealer

Hey, Mary: I noticed Daniel Gibson was not on the current roster. Any idea where he will be playing this fall? -- Susan Fisher, Huron Hey, Susan: I have reached out to Gibson and his agent to try and get you an answer, but I still don't have one. I have heard Philadelphia is interested. All I know is that it appears his time in Cleveland is over, even though as of Friday his name remained on the roster at the team's website, listed as a free agent. Cleveland Plain Dealer

Daniel "Boobie" Gibson tells TMZ ... he was just defending his wife's honor when he got into an altercation with a man at the Essence Music Festival earlier this month ... after the guy disrespected Keyshia Cole in a "profane way." Gibson -- who played with the Cleveland Cavaliers last season -- just called in to "TMZ Live" to explain why he turned himself in to police in New Orleans today on 2nd degree battery charges. Boobie says Keyshia was performing at the event ... when some guy approached her and spouted off some very "disrespectful" comments toward the singer. TMZ.com

"Boobie" Gibson issued a statement to TMZ ... confirming he turned himself in to authorities earlier today. Additionally, Gibson tells us ... "Earlier this month during the Essence Music Festival, I was involved in an incident with other individuals while I was out with my wife." He continues, "It's unfortunate that some see opportunity in taking advantage of people who work hard for what they have achieved." Gibson says he takes pride in being a role model for his son and other kids who look up to him -- and adds, "Once all the facts of the incident come out, I expect to be fully vindicated." TMZ.com

Currently an NBA free agent, Daniel “Booby” Gibson may be on his way out of Cleveland for the first time in his career. You know what that means: time to sell the house. His Westlake, Ohio property is listed at $1.1 million and includes five bedrooms, six bathrooms and something called a “water softener.” Sadly, the weirdest room of all — Gibson’s trophy room — will likely not be included in the sale. What does Gibson consider worthy of his trophy room? Only the most random set of NBA player jerseys, a bejeweled, crystal-looking basketball and a cardboard cut-out of himself SportsGrid.com

Gibson keeps the jerseys of… LaMarcus Aldridge? T.J. Ford? Chauncey Billups? What appears to be Charles Barkley from Team USA (or is it Blake Griffin)? The first two sort of make sense as fellow Texas Longhorns. But then is it a Big-12 thing with Billups? Is it a Big-12 thing plus an SEC thing for Sir Charles? The fifth, unidentifiable jersey may provide a clue to the real pattern here, which remains unknown. SportsGrid.com

Still, if Gibson is to return to Cleveland next season, it will be at a significant pay cut from the $4.8 million he's earning this season. And Gibson said he'd be willing to look at any offer from the team and the city where he grew up. He doesn't want it to end this way. "I would love to be here when we go into the playoffs," he said. "Because I think we are. I think we're like a year away from being a real playoff contender. And it would do so much for me to be a part of the team that after everybody broke up, to still be a part of the team that made the playoffs. That would mean a lot to me." Cleveland Plain Dealer
