HoopsHype Dante Exum rumors

Me: How are defenses attacking you when you have the ball? Dante Exum: I think I've noticed they're trying to be a little more physical with me. Definitely up the court, and trying to pressure me up the court. But as a rookie, that's what I'm going to get. I've noticed some (teams), they're playing halfcourt D, and once I get on (the ball), one of the players looks at his coach, and they're up in me, trying to pick me up the court. So it's just little things like that. It helps me get comfortable bringing the ball up and being secure with the ball. NBA.com

Me: The shot chart shows that most of your shots so far are jumpers. Are teams going under on screen/rolls or sagging off you in the halfcourt to take away your length on drives to the rim? DE: Not necessarily. They've still been pressuring me. I think I've been getting a lot of my shots on the back side of pick and rolls, being on the opposite side, against the split line helping a bit too much. NBA.com

As Snyder watched practice Tuesday night, he noted how Exum and incumbent point guard Trey Burke worked well together. Each took turns as the primary ball-handler. Each took turns playing off the ball. It’s something the Jazz envision during the regular season, their ability to play in the same backcourt in a dual-point guard role. Both will play significant minutes together in Las Vegas. Snyder, however, was emphatic in his desire for both of them to play well defensively, or they run the risk of warming the bench. "Coach has been stressing defense a lot," Exum said. "That’s what I want to be able to go in and do. I want to go in and play hard. I want to help this team on defense and be able to turn defense into offense. I believe everything else will kind of take care of itself." Salt Lake Tribune

"I knew I had to get better with my court awareness, make sure my ball handling was sharp, learn how to shoot with confidence," he says. "I can't even count how many shots I would take; but I went through it because I knew the end result. I got to a point where I was so tired and exhausted I didn't want to do anything. I would basically go to the gym, come back home, fall asleep, then get up and do it again the next day." The Statue of Liberty appears in the distance, and Dante takes a picture with his phone. He studies it, then, after a pause, surveys the real thing. He seems slightly disappointed by what he sees. "It's not that it's not big," he says, gesturing at the monument. "It just looks bigger in the movies." Rolling Stone

If anything, Exum seems to be delighting in it all. And why wouldn't he? Long the subject of speculation, the International Man of Mystery has arrived in the NBA, off to Utah to save the day. As he prepares for another photo shoot, I quickly ask him what he knows about his new home. "I know they have lots of lakes and mountains," he laughs. "I'm ready to get there and see the beautiful cities." Rolling Stone

Steve Luhm: Exum will apparently wear No. 11, I'm told. Some other No. 11s in Jazz history: Delaney Rudd, Sasha Pavlovic, Earl Watson and Jacque Vaughn. Twitter @sluhm
