Point guard Trey Burke was also quite surprised when word of mouth got back to him in New York on Thursday, where he, Gobert and rookie Dante Exum are attending All-Star Weekend festivities. "It’s a little surprising as a teammate,” Burke said. "Sometimes guys hold things in, they bottle things (up) and … just got to let what they really feel go. I’m not saying I agree with it. At the same time, I’m not one of those guys to get super angry about it.” Deseret News

It appears the Jazz are trying to feature Exum as a defender and distributor. His assist-to-turnover ratio is nearly 2-1 and Snyder is going to continue to keep him in the starting lineup. “He’s been consistent in the fact that he’s defended,” Snyder said. “I think our entire group is getting the ball pushed across halfcourt quicker. I like the fact that he sets that example early in the game. I think it’s helped everyone. I think the combination of him being out there with Gordon [Hayward] has settled him a little bit, which is significant. His ability to defend the ball can be a difference-maker for our group. He’s not consistent enough. I still think he gets tired. “I’m asking him to play at a pretty high level of intensity for a guy who’s 19. First he has to play at that level before he can duplicate it all the time.” Boston Globe

This was apparent last Friday, when the Jazz defeated the Golden State Warriors. Burke scored 15 points and handed out seven assists. In his last five games, Burke is averaging 14.6 points per game, up from the 12.7 he's averaged on the season. "I'm good with it," Burke said. "It's a new thing to me, but I'm playing the same amount of minutes as I always was, and I've just come in and tried to be more aggressive offensively. Coach has been on me about holding the ball, so I've just been trying to work on shooting or driving the ball right away, and just being generally aggressive." Salt Lake Tribune

With the Atlanta Hawks in town last week, Snyder saw in one of his former players, 35-year-old Elton Brand, something that he’s dying to see more of in rookie Dante Exum. "You’re 19. You’re in the NBA. That’s kind of like, ‘Wow. Let me take advantage of this,’ " Snyder said. "He’s got to play like that — like this is an experience [and he is] going to get all of it, even if it’s going to be for 15 years. The first year is a year. In Year 15, you’ll look back and say, ‘I wish I had it.’ "You know, Elton Brand is diving on the floor for loose balls. He’s trying to play another year and another year and another year. I want Dante to play like he doesn’t have all those years in front of him." Salt Lake Tribune

A vexing player at the top of the draft was Dante Exum, a point guard from Australia who was projected to be taken among the top four selections. Smith had done player personality analyses but wanted to validate them by having Hill present his player assessments first. The Bucks selected Jabari Parker with their top pick, and Exum fell to Utah at No. 5. “Nothing against Exum, but emotional resiliency, stability and an immediate, assured presence were all key considerations in support of selecting Parker,” Hill said. Me: How are defenses attacking you when you have the ball? Dante Exum: I think I've noticed they're trying to be a little more physical with me. Definitely up the court, and trying to pressure me up the court. But as a rookie, that's what I'm going to get. I've noticed some (teams), they're playing halfcourt D, and once I get on (the ball), one of the players looks at his coach, and they're up in me, trying to pick me up the court. So it's just little things like that. It helps me get comfortable bringing the ball up and being secure with the ball. NBA.com

Me: The shot chart shows that most of your shots so far are jumpers. Are teams going under on screen/rolls or sagging off you in the halfcourt to take away your length on drives to the rim? DE: Not necessarily. They've still been pressuring me. I think I've been getting a lot of my shots on the back side of pick and rolls, being on the opposite side, against the split line helping a bit too much. NBA.com
