HoopsHype Dave Joerger rumors

Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor interviewed Dave Joerger for 2½ hours on Saturday, the next step toward the Memphis Grizzlies coach and Minnesota native becoming the team’s 11th head coach. Taylor smiled when later asked about a meeting that brought two small-town Minnesotans from separate generations together. “Real good,” Taylor said. Minneapolis Star-Tribune

The Timberwolves decided on Joerger as the replacement for Rick Adelman on Saturday night after the Minnesota-born Grizzlies coach met with team leadership, including owner Glen Taylor, two people with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press. Joerger, who went 50-32 in his first season as coach of the Grizzlies and helped the team to the seventh seed in the Western Conference playoff field, is still under contract for two more years in Memphis. But owner Robert Pera is believed to be considering a coaching change after he recently fired CEO Jason Levien and director of player personnel Stu Lash, and it remained unclear just how much the Timberwolves want to give to the Grizzlies for a coach many presume could be fired any day. Being run on a shoestring budget, the Memphis Grizzlies don’t have a chance of getting Tom Thibodeau for both their president’s job and head coaching position. “Do they realize how much that will cost?’’ said one Chicago official, when word surfaced that the Grizzlies will look at the Bulls’ highly regarded coach if Memphis winds up allowing Dave Joerger to take the Timberwolves’ head coaching position. Memphis Grizzlies head coach Dave Joerger is one step closer to joining the Minnesota Timberwolves. Joerger met with Timberwolves officials as expected on Thursday, and a meeting is being scheduled for him to meet with the team's owner, Glen Taylor, in the coming days that could lead to his hiring, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because of the private nature of the talks. USA Today Sports

Sources told ESPN.com that although compensation details with the Grizzlies have to be worked out, Minnesota's fast-moving bid to make Joerger its next coach is gathering momentum. The Wolves are restricted to offering draft picks and/or cash to Memphis to free Joerger from his contract with the Grizzlies. But one source said Thursday that Joerger landing in his home state with the Wolves is "the way this thing is headed." ESPN.com

Sources say Pera contemplated firing Joerger early in his first season but was ultimately talked out of it, after which Memphis rallied from a slow start and Marc Gasol's knee injury to win 50 games and finish seventh in the hypercompetitive West. ESPN.com

The latest bit of clownishness involves Dave Joerger, the highly successful head coach who replaced the last highly successful head coach, and has been given permission to interview for the Minnesota Timberwolves head coaching job. Yes, the same Joerger who was dispatched to radio stations Tuesday to tell people that nothing was changing, he was certainly the head coach going forward, this tumult didn’t involve him. Now Joerger is off on a plane to Minneapolis. Because why have just a little chaos when total chaos is available? Memphis Commercial Appeal
