Andersen recognized the bravery in Collins’ decision, saying “he’s going to have a tough road, but you know what, I think he’s in the right part of a state of mind that he’s going to be … a tough leader.” Collins, who finished this season with the Wizards, is a free agent with an average of 3.6 points and 3.8 rebounds for his career. A physical, seven-foot center, he has played for six teams throughout his 12-year career. The journeyman could find himself out of the NBA next season, but commissioner David Stern said if that happens it would not be because of his announcement. Miami Herald

On NBA relocation committee's unanimous vote against relocating Kings to Seattle and what he expects from full Board of Governors vote. David Stern: "The committee has to do a report, they have to circulate it to the board and we're planning on a board meeting on May 15. We'll see, I can't predict. I didn't see a unanimous vote coming but they decided as strong as the Seattle bid was, and it was very strong, there's some benefit that should be given to a city that has supported us for so long, and has stepped up to contribute to build a new building as well." NBA Commissioner David Stern statement on Jason Collins: "As Adam Silver and I said to Jason, we have known the Collins family since Jason and Jarron joined the NBA in 2001 and they have been exemplary members of the NBA family. Jason has been a widely respected player and teammate throughout his career and we are proud he has assumed the leadership mantle on this very important issue.” Sulia

In 2012-13, teams averaged 19.95 3-point attempts the compared with 14.68 per game in 2002-03. Twenty years ago, teams just attempted 8.95 3-pointers per game. In the early years of the long-range shot, the 3-pointer was limited to specialized shooters. Nowadays, even lumbering centers are trying their luck from 23 feet, 9 inches. "For better or worse, enjoy your own impression because we do not have an impression, but our teams are hot When it's a thing of beauty. And when to they're not they can go 3 for 41, "Stern said last week. "And it's an interesting discussion, and it's also interesting to note the way Un certain teams are now defending the three, giving up the midrange shot, and the statistical variances that eats into play. That's relevant because many of our teams, and soon to be all, are so focused on analytics and the percentages that go with taking shots and various formations that we just think it's interesting. It was not a presentation for purposes of a result, just as an observation to let our teams know where the game is going. " Boston Globe

Quick thought on Sacramento/Seattle with the two important committee meetings days away: Count me among... the many who took note in the wiggle room in recent comments on expansion by David Stern. The commish anything but embraced the idea, but it was more of a polite dismissal compared to his backhand at All-Star weekend. Even the theatrics were good. When someone asked about the chances of expansion as a win-win outcome for the two cities, Stern gave a long pause before answering. Well done. Stern knew the question was coming. Stern knew weeks before the question was coming. Sulia

David Stern doesn't have a vote in what he termed this "wrenching" dilemma between Sacramento and Seattle, but he has a voice, and it remains the league's most powerful one. There is no chance – none – that he is only providing background noise while the league's enormous legal staff examines the two cities, two potential ownership groups, and two proposed arenas in preparation for a long-awaited resolution. The running joke within the league, in fact, is that NBA stands for "Nothing But Attorneys." But the reality is this: Stern will be the chief lawyer in charge until he delivers the office keys next February to his respected and anointed heir, Adam Silver. Sacramento Bee

One league executive Tuesday described the commissioner as "anguishing" over the process that consists of competing offers for one team, proposals for new arenas in Sacramento and Seattle, and questions pertaining to the prudence and practicality of relocating an established incumbent franchise that sold out 19 of 28 seasons. It's unclear whether the Sacramento group, led by software tycoon Vivek Ranadive, satisfied Stern's request for more "details" regarding the counteroffer to the record-setting agreement the Maloofs signed with the Seattle-based group headed by Chris Hansen and Steve Ballmer.
