HoopsHype Dean Demopoulos rumors

May 3, 2014 Updates

Dean Demopoulos: I was the defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Clippers for two years (2010-2012). My last year was the strike season where we beat Memphis in the first round and got swept by San Antonio in the second. During those years Donald Sterling was in litigation concerning his renting policies involving minorities, its all very well documented and accessible. In reading the information it was very clear to me Mr Sterling was certainly a racist. After watching this over time it was also clear to me that money was the tool that he used to stay above the consequences. I myself participated in this by choosing to remain employed by him. The Journal Times has learned, though, that Drew has interviewed Jim Cleamons, who has extensive coaching experience including being Phil Jackson’s assistant with the Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers. Drew has also interviewed Dean Demopoulos, another respected longtime coach, who most recently assisted Vinny Del Negro with the Los Angeles Clippers. Racine Journal-Times

This really is not news; in fact if you re-wind to 2010 in Chicago, similar commentary was coming out of the Bulls locker room. The good news for the Clippers is that they have two qualified coaches on their staff already – the first is Marc Iavaroni who coached the Grizzlies for two seasons. The second is Dean Demopoulos a long time assistant that has been mentioned as a head coaching candidate for several years. HoopsWorld

Former Trail Blazers assistant coach Dean Demopoulos joined me on the Bald Faced Truth radio show on 750-AM (3-6 p.m. on 750-AM). He called into the show from the Clippers bus as it pulled away from PDX on the way to the team hotel (Blazers-Clippers on Tuesday at the Rose Garden Arena.) Demopoulos talked about his time in Portland, which ended after the Blazers won the division and made a playoff run. Said Demopoulos: "In coaching business, you're hired to be fired. I was out of my element. I was in a free fall. There was nothing to grab onto." Oregonian

Lead assistant Dean Demopoulos will not return to the team, according to his agent, Warren LeGarie. Demopoulos has been with McMillan for the past nine seasons, four in Seattle and five in Portland, but will not be retained after his contract expires on Wednesday. McMillan is in the process of shuffling his staff, and said he won't comment on coaches until his staff is complete. Demopoulos declined comment until Wednesday. Oregonian
