The New Orleans Pelicans might not have to do much courting with Golden State Warriors lead assistant Alvin Gentry, who has emerged as a leading candidate for the team's vacancy at head coach. Gentry, who was interviewed by Pelicans executive vice president Mickey Loomis and general manager Dell Demps on Monday night in San Francisco, believes the opportunity to coach star forward Anthony Davis could be career defining, according to a source close to Gentry. ''He's more than interested,'' the source said Thursday morning. ''He really believes that this is a job that would certainly define him as a coach because of the opportunity that it creates. ''Certainly this is one of those jobs that you feel is probably as good as any job available right now, no question. Even if there were no other jobs, it would still be the best.'' New Orleans has an interest in Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau, but that intrigue belongs more with Loomis than Demps, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Thibodeau is waiting for the Bulls to initiate conversations about his future with the franchise, sources said. He has two years left on his contract. Loomis is an executive with the New Orleans Saints, and Thibodeau's tough-minded approach has an especially strong appeal to that part of the organization. Nevertheless, it is believed Demps is less inclined to want a strong-willed coach in the job, especially after so many internal battles with Williams. Demps was the driving force in pushing out Williams as coach, sources said. Yahoo! Sports

Jim Eichenhofer: Demps on next coach: "We're going to begin that process immediately after this. I don't have a timetable. I'm going to lead the search. Hopefully we can find someone who can take us to the next level... We're going to find the best available." Twitter @Jim_Eichenhofer

Marc Stein: Pelicans have issued repeated public denials in last week to shoot down notion that Joe Dumars will soon be hired to oversee front office. And today team source insists to ESPN that Pels GM Dell Demps will lead team's coaching search for successor to ousted Monty Williams Twitter @ESPNSteinLine

General manager Dell Demps had been wrestling for greater control of the franchise and pushed out Williams. Around Williams’ staff this season, there was a sense of decreasing management support and unnecessary obstacles, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Williams, who had one year left on his contract and a team option for a second, had a scheduled meeting with management Tuesday morning, where there was an expectation that the franchise would pick up the 2016-17 option on his deal, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Instead, New Orleans president Mickey Loomis let Williams go. Yahoo! Sports

Bensel, however, didn't address Demps' status. Demps has not been made available to media since the Pelicans were swept in four games by the Golden State Warriors. New Orleans Times-Picayune

Meanwhile, Pelicans general manager Dell Demps is a lame duck. His contract expires this summer and the team has an option for next season. The Pelicans have not indicated if they are going to offer a new deal. While Pelicans coach Monty Williams held his season-ending news conference last week, Demps has not been made available to media for a while. He has not made any public comments since April 16 when he denied a report that he and Williams were given a ''playoffs or else'' mandate during the preseason by management. It feels like these guys should rank higher, given Anthony Davis’s potential free agency a year from now, questions about the surrounding parts, and new rumors that Joe Dumars could still arrive in some supervisory big-picture role above GM Dell Demps — rumors that don’t appear to be heading anywhere for now.
