HoopsHype Delonte West rumors

West says he wants to permanently squash the rumor not just for his sake, but mostly for James and James’ mother. West says both were supportive during his three seasons in Cleveland. In fact, West says Gloria James reminded him of his single mother, Delphina Addison, who raised Delonte and his siblings to be “happy-poor, just enjoy life and the blessings that God has given us. “If we want to continue to grow as a human race, what are we teaching our kids if we try to make humor and fun out of stuff like that?” West says of the rumor. “Number one, something like that never happened. I don’t know where they got that from. “For a strong black woman like that, for people to try to tear her down, that’s terrible. That’s terrible in so many ways.” Dallas Morning News

All indications are that Delonte West will be a former Maverick by Monday evening. The Mavericks have to keep Eddy Curry, based on the simple fact that they need a big, healthy body and Curry appears ready to put his best foot forward as a stopgap center. Dallas Morning News

The Mavericks stints of Melvin Ely and Chris Douglas-Roberts didn't even last as long as Delonte West's first suspension this month. The Mavs waived Ely and Douglas-Roberts on Sunday morning, before they even practiced with the team. It's a good bet that they'll end up on the roster of the Texas Legends, the Mavs' D-League affiliate. The Legends now own the rights of both players. ESPN.com

Cuban says he has not closed the door on the possible return of suspended guard Delonte West. “No decision has been made one way or another,” Cuban said, adding, “It’s pretty much down to me making a decision.” Earlier this evening, Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said he is under a “directive” not to discuss the West situation. Suspended guard Delonte West will not return to the Dallas Mavericks, a source said. The team is in the process of negotiating terms of West's departure with his agent, Dan Fegan, after the fiery guard was suspended Thursday for conduct detrimental to the team. It was the second time the team suspended West in two weeks, although the first suspension lasted only 21 hours, ending after West met with coach Rick Carlisle and president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson. The source said both suspensions stemmed from frequent behavioral missteps by West, an eight-year veteran who was a valuable role player for the Mavs last season, averaging 9.6 points and 3.2 assists while playing tenacious defense at both guard spots. A source said the Mavs have agreed to non-guaranteed deals with a pair of veterans, swingman Chris Douglas-Roberts and center/forward Melvin Ely. They will join the team Friday morning. The Mavs, who are in the process of parting ways with Delonte West, will likely choose between one of the three newcomers for their final roster spot. One potential roadblock could be if negotiations don't progress with West's agent, Dan Fegan, and the Mavs opt to leave West on the suspended list. ESPN.com

In the meantime, because of injuries to Dirk Nowitzki, Chris Kaman and Brandan Wright, the Mavs need some serious help on the frontline. That's why they're bringing in centers Eddy Curry, Chris Douglas-Roberts and Melvin Ely. The Mavs bend over backwards to make it work with West. But they are close to cutting ties with the wily veteran after he was suspended without pay today. Fort Worth Star-Telegram

With the Dallas Mavericks unable to hold their own on the boards during the first seven preseason games, it was obvious they had to get another big body in training camp. And it was obvious that one of the seven guards were going to be finding employment elsewhere. Unfortunately for Delonte West, he's the guard most likely to be finding employment elsewhere. Especially since he was suspended today -- for the second time in 11 days -- for "conduct detrimental to the team.'' Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Doc Rivers has always had a soft spot for his former players. But it was always to a greater extent with West who among other things, battled a bipolar disorder. "I love Delonte," Rivers told CSNNE.com. "I'm always worried about him." CSNNE.com

West has had a slew of problems at just about every stop along his NBA journey, although the drama was relatively low during two separate stints with Boston. "Everybody here loved Delonte," said Paul Pierce. "I loved his competitiveness. Obviously, everybody has their own issues, some more documented than others. But I love what he brings to the table. He can be a character at times; he's very free spirited. But a lot of people love to be around him." CSNNE.com

The Mavericks wasted no time filling a need – and the roster spot that will be created when Delonte West is waived – by putting in a waiver claim for veteran NBA center Eddy Curry, a source said. The deadline for finalizing the 15-man roster that will start the season is Monday. The Mavericks have until then to waive West, who is suspended from the team for the time being. Dallas Morning News

The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have indefinitely suspended guard Delonte West. “We have suspended Delonte for conduct detrimental to the team,” President of Basketball Operations Donnie Nelson said. “The suspension is effective immediately and no other statements will be issued.” Dallas Morning News
