Mention that Barkley doesn't believe the cold shoulder is merited, and Cousins responds as if Barkley is standing directly in front of him: "I have no respect for you and I never will. We have nothing to talk about. So, yes, every time we see each other, there will never be words." Bleacher Report

Cousins is convinced that if you understood the difference between the way his current and previous worlds work, you would’ve known his early troubles were simply growing pains while he adjusted to his new environs. "I've never been a guy who plays the political game," he said in the players' lounge before an exhibition game against Maccabi Haifa at Sleep Train Arena. "It's either right or wrong; that's how I was raised." Bleacher Report

"Coming up as a kid and hearing that from one of the best players ever to come out of Alabama," Cousins said, "a guy people grow up looking up to, to hear him say, 'Well, he's not that good...' I remember it like it was yesterday. Then, coming into my rookie season, you take up for your ex-coach and say I'm the worst thing that ever happened to Sacramento on national TV. Yeah, I'm going to remember." Bleacher Report

Cousins made it his summer goal to be part of the team, taking two weeks off after the season before beginning to prepare and saying he would've been "devastated" if he had not been selected. "There are things I still think are B.S., but I've grown to accept them," he said. "Well, I'm growing to accept them. It's still a bit of a challenge for me." Bleacher Report

Cousins' sense of justice has been tested in basketball more than anywhere else. He and his mother, Monique, believe he has been miscast so many times by Barkley and others that she is surprised to hear that DeMarcus provided her phone number and still conducts a thorough interrogation of a reporter before agreeing to an interview. "He believes everyone is a snake until proven otherwise," said his personal trainer, Keith Williams, who has known him since the 11th grade. "Especially the media." Bleacher Report

Q: What about the idea, which I’ve also heard, that some of the guys weren’t necessarily lobbying for you to be back? Isaiah Thomas: I’ve heard those things too. I don’t know, because I didn’t hear them say it, but I’ve heard people say it and more than one person. I’ve heard Rudy (Gay), and some things about DeMarcus (Cousins) saying some things, but I didn’t hear it, so I can’t say if it’s true or not. For The Win

The fifth overall selection in the 2010 NBA Draft knows what’s in front of his team. But this is a different DeMarcus Cousins. He’s not willing to jump into the Isaiah Thomas hoopla or get caught up in his team’s fast start. He has taken a page from the Jason Thompson handbook and decided to control what he can control. “Phoenix is a good team, (but) I’m not really concerned about the matchups,” Cousins said. “We’re really concerned about the way we go in and play basketball. I’m not really concerned about the individuals on the team. I’m worried about my team and how we’ll go in and perform.” Cowbell Kingdom

The maturity of Cousins, who is now 24 years old, seems to be occurring. Along with Kings teammate Rudy Gay, the former Kentucky Wildcat is eager to leverage the Team USA Gold Medal experience, in which he averaged 9.6 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in nine games (13.8 minutes per game). Bringing that team’s culture to Sacramento, namely the concept of team and defense, are the two key ingredients that Sacramento desperately needs. Cousins himself also seems more comfortable in his own skin, saying, “I’m not perfect, and I may never be perfect, but I’m committed to being the best leader I can be for this team.” CSNBayArea.com

The accolades don’t end with Malone. Newly acquired big man Ryan Hollins says that he has never seen or played with a big man as talented as Cousins, who is “right up there” with Kevin Garnett and Dirk Nowitzki; his teammates in Boston and Dallas, respectively. Hollins, a Clipper last season, cited Cousins’ emerging maturity, having competed against him last season. He added that Cousins needs to sustain it. CSNBayArea.com

Now, China. After Canada and Spain and the U.S. tour, and the travelogue stops there only because Ebola concerns prompted the cancellation of the planned visit to Senegal. Three continents and 2½ months later, and nearly a fourth before USA Basketball scrapped the Africa side trip en route to the World Cup, 24-year-old DeMarcus Cousins is feeling it. Not enough that he can’t find the energy to jab teammate Rudy Gay, an aged man of 28, and not enough to stop Cousins from arriving at Kings camp in positive spirits. But enough. “I feel like I’m about 45 years old,” he said. NBA.com
