HoopsHype DerMarr Johnson rumors
The Minnesota Timberwolves waived free agent forward DerMarr Johnson today, trimming the team's preseason roster to 17. Johnson, No. 6 overall pick in the 2000 NBA draft out of the University of Cincinnati, was waived before the Timberwolves headed overseas today to participate in the NBA Europe Live series. The Timberwolves waived DerMarr Johnson this morning to get their roster to 17 before they depart for London this afternoon. I thought they might keep him around a little longer because he missed a good part of training-camp contact practices while they waited for paperwork to clear from Europe. Don't expect John Thomas to go on the trip either. He's still on the roster, but missed much of camp with a bad hamstring and won't go overseas. Of course, Jonny Flynn is staying behind, too, to rehab his hip. The Wolves are at some point going to get their roster down to 14, although that might not be until Flynn is healthier. They want an extra roster spot cleared in case they have a chance to be opportunistic and pick up a player somewhere down the line. Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Is it too late for free-agent forward DerMarr Johnson to make an impression on Wolves coaches? Delayed paperwork kept Johnson from participating in training camp until Monday night. Johnson, a No. 6 overall pick in the 2000 NBA draft by Atlanta, is still under contract with the Jiangsu Nangang Dragons, a pro team in China. He needed formal clearance from the Dragons (what a nickname!) and the NBA before he was allowed to get on the court. Rambis said he might make cuts before the team goes to Europe to trim the 18-man camp roster. St. Paul Pioneer Press
